RACE BY RACE: LEWIS HAMILTON’S 2024 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS

2024 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

Race day at the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix marked16 years, 11 months and 13 days since Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 debut at the 2007 Australian Grand Prix. He overtook Graham Hill as the British driver with the second-longest Formula 1 career, second only to Jenson Button.

Lewis Hamilton maintained his 100% Q3 appearance record at the Bahrain Grand Prix, qualifying in ninth place. It was his worst qualifying result at the track to date. His previous worst was seventh, recorded in 2023.

During the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton joined Fernando Alonso as only the second driver to have completed 19,000 Grand Prix laps during their Formula 1 career. He also overtook Kimi Raikkonen as the driver to have raced the most laps at Bahrain International Circuit.

Finishing seventh, Hamilton set a new outright record for the most consecutive seasons in which a Formula 1 driver has scored a point. Hamilton previously shared the record with Jenson Button before making 2024 the 18th successive year in which he has scored.

Seventh is Hamilton’s worst Bahrain Grand Prix result since 2012, when he finished eighth. Hamilton crossed the finish line at the Bahrain Grand Prix for the 17th time, extending his record for the most finishes at the track.

2024 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX

For the first time since the end of the 2015 season, Lewis Hamilton was out-qualified by his team-mate at four consecutive races. Hamilton qualified eighth for the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix – the same position as he qualified last year.

Finishing ninth, Lewis Hamilton finished outside of the top five for a fifth consecutive race, marking the first time since the five races between the 2009 Spanish and German Grands Prix that Hamilton failed to finish in the top five at five races in a row.

Hamilton lost a place from where he started in the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix – the first time he has done so in his four appearances at Jeddah Corniche Circuit. Hamilton became the first driver to start eighth on the grid and score a point in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

2024 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

For the first time since 2010, Lewis Hamilton recorded a Q1 elimination at the Australian Grand Prix. This was Hamilton’s third Q2 exit in the last five races. Hamilton became the first Mercedes driver to fail to reach Q3 at the Australian Grand Prix since Michael Schumacher, who also qualified 11th in 2011.

Hamilton retired on Lap 16 of the race with an engine failure. Hamilton’s retirement made this the first time in his career that he failed to finish in the top five at six successive races. This was Hamilton’s first non-finish since the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix and his first retirement in Australia since 2014.

2024 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

Finishing in ninth place at the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix, the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix – eight races ago – remained the last time that Lewis Hamilton recorded a top six finish. Of races which he’s finished at Suzuka, ninth place in 2024 marked the first time Hamilton finished in a position outside of the top five.

Hamilton scored points at Suzuka for the 13th time, equalling Michael Schumacher’s record for the most points-scoring appearances at the track – and equalling Schumacher and Jenson Button for the most top ten finishes here.

With seventh place, Hamilton recorded his best qualifying result of the 2024 season to date. This is the second consecutive season in which Hamilton has qualified seventh at Suzuka.

2024 CHINESE GRAND PRIX

Lewis Hamilton recorded the 11th Q1 exit of his career at the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix. Qualifying 18th, this marked the first time he exited in Q1 since the 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and his worst qualifying performance since qualifying 20th at the 2017 Brazilian Grand Prix. 18th is Hamilton’s second-worst qualifying result in China. His worst is 22nd place, which is where he qualified for the 2016 Chinese Grand Prix. Those are the only two occasions on which Hamilton has not reached Q3 at this venue.

Finishing ninth, Lewis Hamilton became the first driver to score points on 13 occasions at the Chinese Grand Prix, moving clear of Sebastian Vettel at the top of the list. Hamilton became the first driver to score a point from 18th on the grid at the Chinese Grand Prix since 2011, when Mark Webber drove from 18th on the grid to a podium finish. Hamilton was the only driver starting outside of the top nine to score a point in the race. This was Hamilton’s worst Chinese Grand Prix result since retiring from the 2007 race.

This was the third time Hamilton finished ninth in the last three Grands Prix which he completed.

2024 MIAMI GRAND PRIX

With sixth place in the 2024 Miami Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton recorded his first top six finish since his podium result at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix. Hamilton finished ahead of George Russell in a Grand Prix for the first time in 2024. He has finished sixth in every running of the Miami Grand Prix to date.

2024 EMILIA ROMAGNA GRAND PRIX

Lewis Hamilton finished sixth for a second consecutive race at the 2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix having not finished in the top six in any of the previous eight Grands Prix. With eighth place in qualifying, Hamilton qualified outside of the top seven for a ninth consecutive race.

2024 MONACO GRAND PRIX

With seventh place in qualifying for the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton equalled his best qualifying result of the year to date. He also set the seventh fastest time in Q3 at the Japanese Grand Prix. Hamilton’s 2019 pole remains the last time he qualified in the top five for the Monaco Grand Prix.

Hamilton recorded the fastest lap of the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix. In doing so, he set a new record for the most fastest laps recorded with a single team. This was Hamilton’s 54th fastest lap with Mercedes, overtaking Michael Schumacher’s record of 53 fastest laps with Ferrari. Hamilton’s fastest lap at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix made him the first driver to set a fastest lap in 17 Formula 1 seasons. He also equalled Michael Schumacher’s record of setting fastest laps in 15 consecutive years. This was Hamilton’s 16th top ten finish at the Monaco Grand Prix, extending the record for most top ten finishes at the event. Hamilton has scored in every Monaco race since 2010.

2024 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

Race day at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix marked 17 years, 2 months and 22 days since Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 debut at the 2007 Australian Grand Prix. The race therefore made Hamilton the British driver with the longest Formula 1 career, overtaking Jenson Button’s career length of 17 years, 2 months and 16 days. Hamilton also moved to fifth on the overall list of longest Formula 1 careers.

With seventh place, Hamilton equalled his best qualifying result of the season to date. This was the first time in his career that Hamilton qualified outside of the top five at the Canadian Grand Prix. Hamilton maintained his 100% Q3 appearance records at the Canadian Grand Prix – a group which features only five drivers in total.

Hamilton finished fourth in the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, recording his first top five finish since finishing on the podium at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix. Hamilton gained three positions during the race. It was the first time he has ever gained more than one place from where he has started in Montreal.

Hamilton set the fastest lap for a second consecutive race. This was the first time Hamilton secured the fastest lap at two races in a row since doing so at the 2020 Portuguese and Emilia Romagna Grands Prix.

2024 SPANISH GRAND PRIX

Lewis Hamilton recorded his best qualifying result of the season to date, setting the third fastest time in qualifying for the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix. This was the first time Hamilton qualified in the top five since the 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix and the first time he qualified in the top three since the 2023 United States Grand Prix. Hamilton out-qualified team-mate George Russell for only the second time in 2024, having last out-qualified him in Japan.

Hamilton joined Verstappen and Norris on the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix podium. This was the trio’s third podium appearance together, having last finished in the top three together – in the same order – at the 2023 British Grand Prix. Hamilton recorded his first podium finish of the 2024 season, making him the first driver to record top three results in 18 different Formula 1 seasons. He also extended his record for the most consecutive seasons in which a driver has taken a podium finish. This was Hamilton’s first podium finish since the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix.

This was Hamilton’s 12th podium finish at the Spanish Grand Prix. That saw him equal Michael Schumacher’s record for the most podium results at the event.

As a result of his latest podium finish, Hamilton became the third oldest British driver to finish on the podium in Formula 1, moving ahead of Reg Parnell in that particular list. Nigel Mansell and Graham Hill are the only older British drivers to have finished in the top three in an F1 race.

2024 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX

Qualifying fifth at the Austrian Grand Prix for the second successive year, Lewis Hamilton maintained his 100% Q3 appearance record at the Red Bull Ring. He and Max Verstappen are the only current drivers to hold 100% Q3 appearance records at the track. With fourth place in the Grand Prix – and sixth in Saturday’s Sprint – this was the 300th points-scoring race weekend of Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 career. It was not his 300th points-scoring Grand Prix, however, as he only scored points in the Sprint event at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix. Hamilton finished in the top four for a third consecutive race. It was the first time he recorded four successive top four finishes since the 2023 British, Hungarian and Belgian Grands Prix.

2024 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Lewis Hamilton ended a 945 day win drought at the 2024 British Grand Prix, securing the 104th Grand Prix win of his Formula 1 career. This was Hamilton’s first win since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

The 2024 British Grand Prix marked Hamilton’s ninth victory at Silverstone – a new record for the most wins at a single circuit.

At the age of 39 years and 6 months, Hamilton became the oldest driver to win a Formula 1 race so far this millennium. Hamilton is the 11th oldest driver to have won a Grand Prix in F1 history and is the oldest driver to win since Nigel Mansell claimed victory at the 1994 Australian Grand Prix, at the age of 41 years, 3 months and 5 days.

Hamilton became the first driver to win a Grand Prix after making his 300th Grand Prix start. The 2024 British Grand Prix marked his 344th start.

Hamilton’s 2024 British Grand Prix victory came 17 years and 27 days after his first win at the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix, setting a new record for the longest time between first and last wins in F1 history. The previous record of 15 years, 6 months and 28 days was set by Kimi Raikkonen at the 2018 United States Grand Prix.

This was Hamilton’s ninth win on home soil, equalling Michael Schumacher as the driver who has won in his own country on the most occasions. Schumacher took nine wins in Germany at races under the German and European Grands Prix titles.

2024 became the 16th different season in which Hamilton has won a Grand Prix. That sees him overtake Michael Schumacher as the driver who has won a Grand Prix in the most different seasons.

Hamilton’s win made 2024 the first season since 1999 in which three different British drivers have won a Grand Prix.

Hamilton’s podium finish made him the first driver in Formula 1 history to record as many as 150 podium results with a single team. This was Hamilton’s 15th podium finish at Silverstone, extending the record for the most top three finishes at a single circuit. Hamilton has finished on the podium in all of the last 12 races held at Silverstone.

The 2024 British Grand Prix marked Hamilton’s 300th points-scoring Grand Prix. It was his 301st points-scoring race weekend however, as he scored points in the Sprint at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, without scoring points in the Grand Prix itself.

Completing all 52 laps of the 2024 British Grand Prix, Hamilton joined Rubens Barrichello, Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso in the group of drivers who’ve raced more than 1,000 Grand Prix laps at Silverstone.

2024 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX

Lewis Hamilton finished in third place at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, becoming the first driver in Formula 1 history to record 200 podium finishes. This was the tenth time in the last 13 seasons that Hamilton has finished on the podium at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Hamilton recorded consecutive podium finishes for the first time since the 2023 Canadian and Spanish Grands Prix.

Hamilton became the first driver to score points on 17 occasions at the Hungarian Grand Prix, moving clear of Fernando Alonso at the top of the list. On Saturday, he and Alonso qualified in the top ten at the Hungarian Grand Prix for a 17th time, each extending their shared record for the most top ten qualifying results at the track.

2024 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

Along with Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton became the first driver to make 18 starts at the Belgian Grand Prix. Having not qualified in the top five for 11 consecutive races up until the Spanish Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton made the Belgian race the fifth consecutive Grand Prix for which he qualified in the top five.

Hamilton finished second to his team-mate on the road at the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix but a post-race disqualification for George Russel meant that Hamilton claimed the 105th victory of his Formula 1 career at the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix, winning at Spa-Francorchamps for the fifth time. It put him one victory short of equalling Michael Schumacher’s record for the most wins at the track. This was Hamilton’s first win in Belgium since 2020.

Hamilton’s 2024 Belgian Grand Prix victory came 11 years to the day since his first win with Mercedes, at the 2013 Hungarian Grand Prix. Hamilton became the first driver other than Max Verstappen to record multiple victories in the 2024 season.

Hamilton won the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix from third on the grid, meaning that as many wins at Spa have come from third or further back than have come from pole position. Hamilton took victory by just 0.647 seconds – the smallest winning margin in Spa’s history on the Formula 1 calendar.

Hamilton’s win marked the 150th podium finish for car number 44 in Formula 1. Hamilton has recorded all but three of those podiums, with Piero Taruffi, Maurice Trintignant and Olivier Gendebien recording the others.

This was Hamilton’s 13th points-scoring appearance at Spa-Francorchamps, overtaking Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel as the driver who has scored points on the most occasions at the track.

He was voted Driver of the Day for the second time in three races, winning the accolade for the 16th time in his career.

2024 DUTCH GRAND PRIX

Lewis Hamilton failed to reach Q3 for the third time this season. He was out in Q2 at the Australian Grand Prix and was eliminated in Q1 at the Chinese Grand Prix. This was the second year in succession that Hamilton failed to reach Q3 at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Hamilton’s eighth place in the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix marked his worst result since finishing ninth in the Chinese Grand Prix, as well as his worst result to date at Zandvoort. Despite that, Hamilton was the only driver who started outside of the top ten to score a point at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix. This was only the second time – after the Australian Grand Prix – that the driver starting 14th scored a point in 2024. It was the first time since 1970 that the driver starting 14th scored a point in the Dutch Grand Prix.

2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Lewis Hamilton qualified in the top ten at Monza for the 16th time, equalling Michael Schumacher as the driver who has qualified in the top ten on the most occasions at the Italian Grand Prix.

For the third consecutive season, Hamilton finished fifth in the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. Hamilton scored points at Monza for the 15th time, making him the first driver to do so. He also equalled Michael Schumacher’s record of 15 top ten finishes at the track. In the closing stages of the race, he became the second driver – after Fernando Alonso – to have raced 100,000km of Grand Prix laps in his Formula 1 career. Hamilton finished fifth in the Italian Grand Prix for the third consecutive season.

2024 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX

Finishing ninth at the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton became the first driver to score points at Baku City Circuit on seven occasions, moving ahead of both Sebastian Vettel and Sergio Perez on the list of drivers with the most points-scoring appearances at the track. Having started from the pit lane after making changes to his car under parc ferme conditions, this was the first time Hamilton gained ten or more positions in a Grand Prix since gaining 14 places in the 2022 Italian Grand Prix. Ninth place was Hamilton’s worst result since the Chinese Grand Prix, where he also finished ninth.

Hamilton maintained his record of being the only driver who has completed every racing lap to date at Baku City Circuit and also maintained his record of scoring points each time he has started a race from the pit lane. He finished third from the pit lane at the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix and finished fourth from the pit lane at the 2017 Brazilian Grand Prix. He is the first driver to score a point having started in the pit lane since Lance Stroll finished seventh having started there in the 2023 United States Grand Prix.

2024 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX

Lewis Hamilton made his 350th Formula 1 start at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, equalling Kimi Raikkonen for second on the list of most Grand Prix appearances. Qualifying third, Hamilton maintained his record of never qualifying outside of the top five in any of his 15 appearances at Marina Bay Street Circuit. This was Hamilton’s first top three qualifying result since he qualified on the front row at the British Grand Prix.

Hamilton finished sixth in the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, scoring points at Marina Bay Street Circuit for the 12th time in his career. He equalled Sebastian Vettel as the driver who has picked up points on the most occasions at the track. During the race, Hamilton became the first driver to have raced 800 Grand Prix laps at Marina Bay Street Circuit.

2024 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX

Lewis Hamilton made his 351st Grand Prix start at the 2024 United States Grand Prix, overtaking Kimi Raikkonen for second on the list of of most Grands Prix started by a driver in F1 history. Along with Sergio Perez, Hamilton became the first driver to make 12 appearances at COTA having never missed a race at the track since it joined the F1 calendar in 2012.

Until 2024, Hamilton had never previously qualified outside of the top five for the United States Grand Prix. That change, as he was a surprise exit in Q1. Setting the 19th fastest time, Hamilton recorded his first back row qualifying result since crashing out in Q1 at the 2017 Brazilian Grand Prix. Hamilton recorded Mercedes’ first-ever Q1 exit at COTA. The team had previously recorded two Q2 eliminations at the track, back in 2012 and 2013. It was only the 12th Q1 exit of Hamilton’s career. He was last out in Q1 at the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix. 2024 becomes only the third season – after 2009 and 2016 – in which Hamilton has recorded multiple Q1 eliminations.

Hamilton was the only driver to retire from the 2024 United States Grand Prix, with his race coming to an end in the gravel trap on the second lap. Before 2022, Hamilton had never finished outside of the top four in the United States Grand Prix. He was disqualified from the 2023 COTA race and failed to finish in 2024. This was the first ever DNF for a Mercedes driver at the United States Grand Prix.

Hamilton’s retirement brought about a full Safety Car deployment for the first time since the Canadian Grand Prix, ending the longest period without a Safety Car in almost 20 years. This was Hamilton’s second retirement of the year – his first since the Australian Grand Prix. Prior to the 2024 United States Grand Prix, Hamilton had completed every single Grand Prix lap raced at Circuit of The Americas since the track joined the F1 calendar in 2012. Lap 2 of the race was the first at the circuit which Hamilton did not complete.

2024 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX

Along with Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton equalled Jack Brabham as the driver who has recorded the most top ten qualifications in Mexico City in qualifying for the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix. Finishing fourth in the race, Hamilton recorded his best result since winning the Belgian Grand Prix. This was the first time Hamilton failed to finish on the podium in Mexico since 2018. During the race, Hamilton became the second driver – after Fernando Alonso – to have raced 20,000 laps in Formula 1.

2024 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX

For the second time in the last three races, Lewis Hamilton was eliminated in Q1 at the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Hamilton recorded Mercedes’ second Q1 exit at Interlagos. He also brought about the team’s other Q1 exit here, after crashing out in the early stages of qualifying for the 2017 Brazilian Grand Prix.

With Max Verstappen out in Q2 and Hamilton having been eliminated in Q1, this was the first time since the start of Verstappen’s career that neither driver reached Q3. It was the first qualifying session since the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix in which neither Hamilton nor Verstappen appeared in Q3.

Finishing tenth, Hamilton made this the third consecutive season in which the driver starting 14th in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix scored a point. Hamilton’s tenth place marked his worst result at Interlagos since retiring from the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix.

2024 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX

Lewis Hamilton finished as runner-up in the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, ensuring Mercedes recorded their first 1-2 finish in two years, since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. In total, this was the team’s 60th 1-2 result. They became the second team to record 60 1-2 finishes, with Ferrari having reached the milestone 22 years previously at the 2002 United States Grand Prix.

With his second place finish, Hamilton extended the record for most circuits with a podium finish to 36. Of the 38 circuits he’s raced at in F1, Buddh International Circuit and Miami International Autodrome are the only ones at which he has never finished in the top three. This was Hamilton’s first podium result since his victory at the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix. He also finished second on the road to his team-mate then, before Russell was disqualified. Hamilton gained eight positions during the race – the most of any driver.

2024 QATAR GRAND PRIX

Setting the sixth fastest time in Q3, Lewis Hamilton qualified outside of the top five for a fifth consecutive Grand Prix. Hamilton’s sixth place marked the first time that a Mercedes driver qualified outside of the top three at Lusail Circuit. Hamilton crossed the line 12th in the Qatar Grand Prix. In races that he has finished, this was the first time Hamilton finished outside of the top ten since the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

2024 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes closed the curtain on the most successful team and driver partnerships in Formula 1 history at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This was Hamilton’s 246th and final Grand Prix appearance with the team. He holds the record for most starts with a single team. The race was also Hamilton’s last in a Mercedes-powered car. Hamilton has made all of his 355 starts to date using Mercedes power.

Hamilton maintained his record of being the only driver to start every race at Yas Marina Circuit to date, this being his 16th start at the track.

Hamilton was the big name to exit in Q1 at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Prior to 2023, Hamilton had never qualified outside of the top five at Yas Marina Circuit. He qualified 11th in 2023 and only 18th in 2024. Hamilton recorded Mercedes’ first-ever Q1 exit at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The team had failed to qualify in the top ten here only twice previously but both of those times were with Q2 eliminations. Hamilton recorded his third Q1 exit in the last six races, having recorded his previous three Q1 exits over a period of 144 appearances.

On Lap 40 of the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Hamilton became the first driver to have raced 800 laps at Yas Marina Circuit. He finished the race in fourth place, recording the best result to date for the driver starting 16th at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. No one had ever previously finished above tenth place at Yas Marina Circuit having started 16th.
