Max Verstappen kicked off his 2024 campaign with a Grand Slam victory at the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix. On Friday, Verstappen secured the 33rd pole position of his career, equalling both Jim Clark and Alain Prost for fifth place in the all-time pole list. It was Verstappen’s third pole position in Bahrain, seeing him equal Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton as the driver with the most poles at Bahrain International Circuit. Sebastian Vettel is the only other driver to win nine races in a row, doing so at the end of the 2013 season. Verstappen has now won all but one of the last 20 Grands Prix. This is the first time in his career that Verstappen has won the first two races of a season. He is the first driver to win the first two races of the year since Sebastian Vettel did so in 2018.

Max Verstappen recorded his 100th podium finish at the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, becoming the seventh driver to record 100 podium finishes in Formula 1. He set a new record for the youngest age at which a driver has recorded their 100th podium finish, being over four years younger than previous record holder Sebastian Vettel. 2024 is the second year in a row that a driver has recorded their 100th podium finish in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso recorded his 100th top three finish in last year’s Jeddah race. With Verstappen on the grid, this was the 550th World Championship race which a Dutch driver started.

Verstappen secured pole position at Albert Park with the fastest lap in the track’s history. This was the 35th pole position of Verstappen’s career. Having also taken pole in Australia in 2023, Verstappen became the seventh driver to record multiple pole positions at Albert Park and the sixth driver to record successive pole positions at the track.

Verstappen recorded pole position for a fourth consecutive race. It’s the third time in his career that he has recorded a streak of four successive pole positions. Verstappen’s retirement brought an end to his 43-race scoring streak – the second-longest scoring streak in Formula 1 history, as well as the second-longest finishing streak in the sport. Verstappen became the eighth Albert Park polesitter to retire from the race. It was the first time the polesitter retired from the Australian Grand Prix since Lewis Hamilton did so in 2014. This was the first race since the 2022 United States Grand Prix from which the polesitter retired.

Having led the opening lap of the race, Verstappen made this the tenth consecutive race at which he led a lap. It’s the 15th time in F1 history that a driver led at least one lap in ten consecutive races.

2024 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

In total, it was the 25th time that a driver has taken pole at five consecutive races.

Verstappen started from the front row for the seventh consecutive race – the longest front row starting streak of his career to date.

This was Verstappen’s third consecutive pole position and third consecutive win at Suzuka. He is only the second driver – after Michael Schumacher between 2000 and 2002 – to win three Suzuka races in a row. The Netherlands equalled Finland for fifth on the list of most Grands Prix won by a nation as a result of Verstappen’s Suzuka win. Finland’s 57 wins are shared between Keke Rosberg, Mika Hakkinen, Kimi Raikkonen, Heikki Kovalainen and Valtteri Bottas.

During the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix, Verstappen became the fourth driver to lead as many as 3,000 Grand Prix laps during their Formula 1 career.

2024 CHINESE GRAND PRIX

For the sixth consecutive race weekend, Max Verstappen secured pole position at the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix, in what is now the longest pole streak of Verstappen’s career. This was the 13th time in Formula 1 history that a driver has taken six poles in a row. Verstappen is the ninth different driver to achieve the feat, after Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Mika Hakkinen, Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

With pole at the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix, Verstappen became the first driver in 25 years to take pole at all of the first five races of the year. Mika Hakkinen was the last driver to do so, in 1999. Verstappen is the fifth driver to do so in total, after Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost and Hakkinen.

He is only the fourth driver to have taken pole at as many as 21 different circuits, overtaking Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna on the list of most circuits at which a driver has taken pole. This was Verstappen’s first top four qualification at Shanghai International Circuit.

Verstappen reached Q3 for the 169th time in his career, overtaking Felipe Massa for fifth in the list of most Q3 appearances since the knockout system was introduced in 2006.

After winning Saturday’s Sprint race, Max Verstappen took victory in the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix, securing the 58th win of his Formula 1 career. Verstappen became the tenth different driver to win the Chinese Grand Prix and made Shanghai International Circuit the 26th different circuit at which he has won in Formula 1. Verstappen’s Chinese Grand Prix victory left Marina Bay Street Circuit – host of the Singapore Grand Prix – as the only track on the current calendar at which he has never taken a victory.

The 2024 Chinese Grand Prix was Verstappen’s 31st victory from pole position, equalling Sebastian Vettel for third in the list of drivers who’ve won the most Grands Prix having started from the front of the grid.

As well as being Verstappen’s 57th victory, the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix also marked the 57th win for a Dutch driver in Formula 1. That saw the Netherlands overtake Finland as the nation to have won the fifth-most F1 races.

Verstappen made this the 12th time that a driver has led at least one lap in 12 consecutive Grands Prix. It equalled his own personal best for the most consecutive races in which a driver has led, having previously led 12 consecutive races between the 2023 Australian and Italian Grands Prix.

Verstappen made his 49th appearance in car number 1 at the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix, overtaking Alain Prost for third on the list of most starts in car number 1.

2024 MIAMI GRAND PRIX

This was the first Miami Grand Prix not to be won by Max Verstappen. Verstappen started from pole and finished in second place. It was the third time in three Miami races that the polesitter has finished as runner-up.

After leading the Sprint race from lights to flag, Max Verstappen secured pole position for the 2024 Miami Grand Prix, recording the 38th pole position of his Formula 1 career. Verstappen became the fifth driver in F1 history to secure seven consecutive pole positions. Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton are the only other drivers to have done so. It put him one pole position away from equalling Senna’s 35-year-old record for the most consecutive poles in F1.

Verstappen became the first driver to secure pole position at all of the first six races of the season since Alain Prost did so in 1993. Only two other drivers have taken pole at all of the first six races of the year – Ayrton Senna (1988) and Nigel Mansell (1992).

Miami International Autodrome became the 22nd different circuit at which Verstappen has taken pole position. He equalled Alain Prost for third on the list of most circuits at which a driver has secured a pole position. Only Lewis Hamilton (32) and Sebastian Vettel (23) now sit ahead of Verstappen on the list.

Verstappen recorded his 103rd top three finish, equalling Kimi Rakkonen for sixth on the list of most podium finishes in Formula 1 and retaining his record of finishing in the top three in every Miami Grand Prix to date. This was the first race in which Verstappen finished in a worse position than where he started since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

The 2024 Miami Grand Prix was the 13th consecutive race in which Verstappen led a lap. This was only the seventh time that a driver has led at least one lap in 13 consecutive races. Verstappen is the first driver to do so since Lewis Hamilton in 2020.

2024 EMILIA ROMAGNA GRAND PRIX

Recording an eighth successive pole position at the 2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Max Verstappen equalled Ayrton Senna’s 35-year-old record for the most consecutive poles in F1. Senna took eight poles in a row between the 1988 Spanish Grand Prix and the 1989 United States Grand Prix. Verstappen also became only the second driver, after Alain Prost in 1993, to secure pole position at all of the first seven races of the season.

Verstappen is the sixth driver to have taken multiple pole positions at Imola. He is the fifth driver to take successive poles at the track, after Rene Arnoux, Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen. Schumacher was the last driver to take consecutive poles at the track, in 2002 and 2003.

On Sunday, Verstappen claimed the 59th victory of his Formula 1 career. He was under increasing pressure from Lando Norris towards the end of the race and ultimately won by 0.725 seconds – the third smallest winning margin in Imola’s history on the F1 calendar. This was the smallest winning margin since Verstappen won the 2023 Australian Grand Prix – which finished behind the Safety Car – by 0.179 seconds. The last closer finish under green flag conditions was at the 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which Verstappen also won, by 0.594 seconds.

This was Verstappen’s third consecutive Imola win, having also won the 2021 and 2022 Emilia Romagna Grands Prix. He equalled Michael Schumacher as the driver to have won the most consecutive Imola races. Schumacher won three races in a row here between 2002 and 2004. Verstappen became the fourth driver – after Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Michael Schumacher – to have won as many as three races at Imola.

Verstappen’s win saw him record the 104th podium finish of his F1 career, overtaking Kimi Raikkonen for sixth on the list of most top three results in the sport. The 2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix marked Verstappen’s 32nd win from pole position. He overtook Sebastian Vettel for third on the list of most victories from pole position. Italy became the fourth country – after Austria, Mexico and the United States – in which Verstappen has taken five race victories.

The Imola race was the 14th consecutive race in which Verstappen led a lap. This was only the fifth time in Formula 1 that a driver led a lap in 14 successive races. Verstappen is the first driver to achieve the feat since Lewis Hamilton in 2020.

2024 MONACO GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen’s record-equalling run of eight consecutive pole positions came to an end at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix. He could qualify no higher than sixth. This was the first time he failed to qualify in the top five since the 2023 United States Grand Prix, where he also qualified sixth.

The 2024 Monaco Grand Prix was the first race in which Max Verstappen did not lead a lap since the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, ending a streak of 14 consecutive races at which he has led at least a single lap – the fifth longest such streak in F1 history. This was the first race in which Verstappen finished in a position outside of the podium places since finishing fifth at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. Not counting DNFs, this was the first time Verstappen finished as low as sixth since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. It was also the first time since 2019 that Verstappen did not finish on the podium at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Continuing to lead the Drivers’ Championship after the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, Max Verstappen equalled Sebastian Vettel as the driver to have led the title race on the third-most occasions. This is the 62nd race after which Verstappen has led the championship.

2024 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen set an identical lap time to George Russell in qualifying for the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix but started second on the grid as Russell set his lap time before him. Verstappen qualified on the front of the grid for a third successive Canadian Grand Prix. This was the first time since 2019 that he did not take pole position at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

On Sunday, Verstappen secured the 60th victory of his Formula 1 career at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix. Verstappen became the third driver to record 60 Grand Prix wins in F1, after Michael Schumacher at the 2002 British Grand Prix and Lewis Hamilton at the 2017 Singapore Grand Prix. Verstappen became the fourth driver to have won three races at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and the third (after Schumacher and Hamilton) to have taken three consecutive wins at the track.

After the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, Verstappen led the Drivers’ Championship for the 63rd time. He overtakes Sebastian Vettel as the driver to have led the standings on the fourth-most occasions.

2024 SPANISH GRAND PRIX

Setting the second fastest time in Q3 for the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix, Max Verstappen started on the front row at Catalunya for a fourth consecutive season. For the third season in a row, Verstappen took victory at the Spanish Grand Prix. This was the 61st Grand Prix victory of Verstappen’s career. Having won the last race in Canada, this was the first time since the Japanese and Chinese Grands Prix that Verstappen took two wins in a row.

Verstappen won the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix by 2.219 seconds – the smallest winning margin at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya since Verstappen claimed his first win at the track by 0.616 seconds in 2016. Verstappen became the fourth driver – after Mika Hakkinen, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton – to record as many as three successive Spanish Grand Prix wins and the third – after Schumacher and Hamilton – to win the event on as many as four occasions.

With his win, Verstappen recorded his 106th podium finish, equalling Alain Prost and Fernando Alonso for fourth on the all-time list of most top three finishes in Formula 1. This was Verstappen’s eighth top three finish at Catalunya. The track equalled the Red Bull Ring as the circuit at which Verstappen has recorded the most top three finishes.

2024 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX

After winning the Sprint race on Saturday morning, Max Vertappen secured pole position for the 40th time in his Formula 1 career at the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix. He became the fifth driver to take as many as 40 pole positions, after Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton. The Red Bull Ring became the first circuit at which Verstappen has taken as many as five pole positions. He is the first driver to secure five consecutive poles at the track, extending his record for the most overall pole positions at the venue.

Finishing fifth after a late race collision with Lando Norris when fighting for the win, Verstappen lost four positions from where he started. It was the first time Verstappen has lost as many as four places in a race which he has finished since losing five positions in the 2022 British Grand Prix.

2024 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen finished as runner-up at the 2024 British Grand Prix, recording the 107th top three finish of his career. That moved him clear of Alain Prost and Fernando Alonso to a clear fourth place on F1’s all-time podium list. This was Verstappen’s 30th runner-up finish, moving ahead of both Rubens Barrichello and Valtteri Bottas to seventh on the list of most second place finishes in F1. Verstappen’s podium made this the 55th consecutive points-scoring race for Red Bull. They equalled the fifth-longest scoring streak for a team in F1 history.

2024 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX

After maintaining his 100% Q3 appearance rate at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Saturday, Max Verstappen went on to finish fifth on Sunday. This was the first time since 2021 that Verstappen did not win at the Hungaroring.

2024 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

For the first time since the Austrian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen was the fastest driver in qualifying for the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix. 2024 is the fourth season in a row in which Verstappen has set the fastest qualifying time at the Belgian Grand Prix – but it is also the third year in a row in which he carries a grid penalty which will see him not start from pole position. If not for grid penalties, Verstappen would’ve equalled Ayrton Senna’s record for the most successive poles at Spa-Francorchamps. Senna recorded four poles in a row at the track between 1988 and 1991.

Verstappen instead started 11th for the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix. He finished fourth int he race. This was Verstappen’s first fourth place finish in almost five years, since the 2019 Russian Grand Prix. It was the first time since 2019 that Verstappen did not finish on the Belgian Grand Prix podium.

Verstappen gained seven positions in the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix – the most places he has gained in a race since moving up eight places at the 2023 Miami Grand Prix.

2024 DUTCH GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen failed to take pole position or win at his home Grand Prix for the first time since Zandvoort returned to the Formula 1 calendar. The Dutchman qualified second, recording his fourth front row start at the track. He equalled Graham Hill and Rene Arnoux as the driver who has made the most front row starts at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Finishing second on his 200th start, Verstappen becomes only the second World Champion in the 2000s – after Kimi Raikkonen – who has failed to win on his 200th appearance. Verstappen recorded his second podium finish in the last five races. He also finished as runner-up at the British Grand Prix. Verstappen became only the sixth driver to have taken as many as four podium finishes at Zandvoort.

This was the first time since the Monaco Grand Prix that Verstappen finished in the same position as he started. Verstappen has finished where he started on every Dutch Grand Prix appearance to date.

2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen qualified seventh for the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. It marked his worst qualifying result since failing to reach Q3 at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. This was his worst qualifying result at Monza since 2019. With sixth place in the race, Verstappen recorded his first result outside of the top five positions since the Monaco Grand Prix, where he also finished sixth.

2024 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX

Baku City Circuit remains one of only three on the current calendar – along with Marina Bay Street Circuit and Las Vegas Strip Circuit – at which Verstappen has never taken pole position. Qualifying sixth, this was the first time since 2016 that Verstappen qualified outside of the top five positions in Azerbaijan – though he did maintain his 100% Q3 appearance record at the track.

Verstappen finished fifth in the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, making this the 60th consecutive race weekend in which Red Bull scored a point. They became only the fourth constructor, after McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes, to have scored points in 60 successive Grands Prix. Having finished sixth at the Italian Grand Prix, this was the first time Verstappen finished outside of the top four at two races in a row since the 2021 British and Hungarian Grands Prix.

2024 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX

The 2024 Singapore Grand Prix marked Max Verstappen’s 180th race with Red Bull, equalling Michael Schumacher for second place on the list of drivers who’ve made the most starts with a single constructor during their Formula 1 career. Schumacher started 180 races with Ferrari between 1996 and 2006.

Verstappen qualified on the front row for the first time since the Dutch Grand Prix. Second equals his best qualifying result at the Singapore Grand Prix, having also qualified on the front row in both 2017 and 2018. Marina Bay Street Circuit remains one of three circuits on the current calendar – along with Baku City Circuit and Las Vegas Strip Circuit – at which Verstappen has never taken pole position.

The track also remains the only one on the current Formula 1 calendar at which Verstappen has never won. Verstappen equalled his best result to date at the venue, finishing as runner-up for the first time since 2018. He became the fifth driver to have taken as many as three top three finishes at the track. This was Verstappen’s third podium finish in the eight races since his last win. All three of those podium finishes have been second place results.

2024 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen made his 181st start with Red Bull at the 2024 United States Grand Prix, overtaking Michael Schumacher for second on the list of most F1 starts with a single constructor. Verstappen qualified second for the race, meaning he and Lando Norris will share the front row for the sixth time this season. The 2024 United States Grand Prix is only the second time, after his 2021 pole position, that Max Verstappen has set one of the top two times in qualifying at COTA.

Verstappen joined the Ferrari drivers on the 2024 United States Grand Prix podium. This was Verstappen’s first third place finish since the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix. He took 44 podium finishes in the interim period. Verstappen’s podium saw Red Bull equal Mercedes as the team with the most top three finishes at Circuit of The Americas. This was Red Bull’s 12th podium result at the venue. It was Verstappen’s sixth consecutive top three result at Circuit of The Americas.

Of races he has finished at COTA, this was the first time Verstappen finished in a worse position than where he started.

2024 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen qualified in second place for the third consecutive race weekend at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix. Along with Lewis Hamilton, Verstappen qualified in the top ten in Mexico for the ninth time, equalling Jack Brabham as the driver who has recorded the most top ten qualifications in Mexico City.

After being handed two ten second penalties for forcing another driver off track and leaving the track and gaining an advantage, Verstappen finished sixth in the race. Verstappen’s DNF at the 2024 Australian Grand Prix remains the only time that he has finished outside of the top six in the last 47 races. Verstappen’s points made this the 64th consecutive points-scoring weekend for Red Bull, equalling McLaren for the second-longest scoring streak for a team in Formula 1.

2024 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen made his 205th consecutive Grand Prix start at the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, equalling Nico Rosberg for third on the list of drivers who’ve made the most consecutive starts in Formula 1.

Verstappen’s Q2 exit meant that every driver on the grid failed to reach Q3 at least once during the 2024 season. It ended a streak of 27 consecutive Q3 appearances for the Dutch driver. 12th place marked Verstappen’s worst qualifying result since qualifying 15th for the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Verstappen lost his 100% Q3 appearance rate at Interlagos.

On Sunday, Verstappen recorded his first Grand Prix victory in over four months, winning the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix from 17th on the grid. It ended a ten-race win-less streak – his longest such streak since the 11 races between the 2020 Spanish and Sakhir Grands Prix. This was Verstappen’s third win at Interlagos, making him only the fourth driver – after Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton – to win as many as three Grands Prix at the track. Verstappen became the first driver to win at Interlagos in successive seasons since Nico Rosberg in 2014 and 2015.

Verstappen’s win was the first from 17th on the grid since Kimi Raikkonen won from that position at the 2005 Japanese Grand Prix. It was the third win in total from 17th on the grid, with John Watson’s win at the 1982 Detroit Grand Prix being the only other F1 win from 17th. In total, this was the fifth Grand Prix to be won from 17th or further back on the grid. Verstappen became the first driver in Formula 1 history to win from as many as ten different grid positions. This was the 30th time that Verstappen won a Grand Prix having not started from pole position. He is only the fourth driver to record as many as 30 wins having not started from pole, after Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton.

Verstappen’s podium was the tenth in Formula 1 history to be recorded from 17th on the grid. It was the first podium result scored from this position since Romain Grosjean finished third in the 2013 Indian Grand Prix. This was Verstappen’s sixth podium finish in Brazil, making him the fifth driver to record as many as six podium finishes at Interlagos.

Verstappen won the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix by 19.477 seconds – the largest winning margin at Interlagos since the 2000 Brazilian Grand Prix.

Gaining 16 positions over the course of the race, this was the most places Verstappen has gained in a Grand Prix since making up 18 positions during the 2021 Russian Grand Prix. He had never previously gained more than three places in a Grand Prix at Interlagos.

Race day in Brazil marked the 897th consecutive day on which Verstappen has led the Drivers’ Championship standings, having been at the top of the order since the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix. That saw him overtake Michael Schumacher’s former record of 896 days leading the championship from the 2000 United States Grand Prix to the 2003 Australian Grand Prix.

With Verstappen scoring points in the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, this was the 65th consecutive race at which Red Bull have scored points. It saw them overtake McLaren for the second-longest scoring streak for a team in Formula 1 history.

2024 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX

Finishing fifth in the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, Max Verstappen was crowned World Champion for the fourth successive season. Verstappen became Formula 1’s sixth 4-time World Champion and became only the second driver, after Sebastian Vettel, to win all of his first four titles in consecutive years. Verstappen won the championship on a Saturday for the second year in succession and became the eighth driver to win the title in the United States. Of F1’s four visits to Las Vegas, this was the third time that the title has been decided in the city. All three drivers who have won the title in Vegas – Nelson Piquet in 1981, Keke Rosberg in 1982 and Max Verstappen in 2024 – have done so by finishing in fifth place.

2024 QATAR GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen set the fastest lap time in qualifying at the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix. This was the first time Verstappen set the fastest lap time in qualifying since the Belgian Grand Prix and would have been the first time he’d start from pole position since the Austrian Grand Prix in June. However, Verstappen was handed a one-place grid penalty after having been deemed to have driven unnecessarily slowly in Q3. Nevertheless, Verstappen started from the front row for the first time since the Mexico City Grand Prix. His penalty meant that he had now started from pole position only once in the last 16 Grands Prix.

Verstappen’s fastest lap time in Q3 was a 1:20.520 – 0.307 seconds faster than Lewis Hamilton’s former track record, set in qualifying for the 2021 race.

Verstappen claimed his 63rd victory at the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix. This was Verstappen’s ninth win of the 2024 season, making this the 20th time that a driver recorded as many as nine wins in a single season. Verstappen became the first driver to record multiple Grand Prix wins at Lusail Circuit and also became the first driver to secure back-to-back wins at the track.

The 2024 Qatar Grand Prix was the 14th race in which Verstappen led every lap. He overtook Jim Clark as the driver who has led from start to end in the fourth-most races. Only Lewis Hamilton, Ayrton Senna and Sebastian Vettel are now ahead of Verstappen on the list. This was the first time Verstappen has led from start to end since the Bahrain Grand Prix.

This was the third consecutive Qatar Grand Prix in which a single driver led every lap. Lusail Circuit becomes the second track – after Zandvoort – at which one driver has led from start to end in all of the first three World Championship events at a circuit.

Verstappen made the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix the 400th round of the World Championship in which the driver of car number 1 finished on the podium.

Verstappen’s win made him the third driver – after Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel – to reach 3,000 points scored in their Formula 1 career.

With Red Bull confirmed to finish no higher than third in the championship as a result of the Qatar Grand Prix, Verstappen became the first driver to win the title in a year that his team did not finish in the top two in the Constructors’ Championship since Nelson Piquet in 1983. It was only the third time in F1 history this had happened, the other time being Keke Rosberg winning the title in 1982 when his team – Williams – finished fourth in the Constructors’ Championship. Verstappen became only the second driver – after Piquet – to win the title twice in seasons that his team did not win the Constructors’ Championship.

2024 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen qualified in fifth place for the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, making this the first time since 2019 that he did not take pole position for the Yas Marina race. It was also the first time since 2018 that Verstappen qualified outside of the top three here.

Verstappen finished in sixth place, equalling his worst result in the last 21 Grands Prix. This was Verstappen’s worst result at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix since he finished 16th on his first appearance at the track in 2015. This was the first time Verstappen finished the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in a worse position than where he started since 2018.

With Verstappen crowned World Champion, he led Drivers’ Championship after a 78th round following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. That saw him equal Alain Prost for third on the list of most rounds after which a driver has led the championship.
