The 200th consecutive points-scoring race for Mercedes engines, Perez could equal Brundle’s win-less race tally and Vettel could equal Schumacher’s tally of wins at different Grands Prix. Here are the records which are up for grabs over the 2019 Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend!
The Numbers and Milestones
This is the 1001st race in Formula 1’s history, the third Azerbaijan Grand Prix and the fourth F1 race at the Baku City Circuit.
The 47th lap of the race will be the 200th racing lap of the Baku City Circuit.
This will be the 80th F1 race to have been held in the month of April.
A Mercedes-powered car has scored a point in every race since China 2008. If a Mercedes-powered car scores a point at the 2019 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, this will be the 200th consecutive race where their engines have scored a point.
Sergio Perez will surpass Martin Brundle’s tally of most races without a victory this weekend, should he fail to win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. It will put the Mexican fourth in the all-time list of most Grands Prix without a win.
The records to beat:
Lewis Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo have the chance to increase the record of total wins at the Baku City Circuit to two this weekend – no driver has won at this track more than once. Hamilton could become the first back-to-back winner of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
If Red Bull win, they can equal Mercedes’ tally of victories at the track, while Mercedes could extend the overall record to three wins.
No driver has taken more than one pole at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix yet. Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel could be the first driver to take multiple pole positions at the track this weekend, while Vettel could be first to take consecutive poles at the Baku City Circuit.
Sergio Perez has more podiums than any other driver at the circuit, with two. He could move the record to three this weekend, or may be joined on the record of two podium finishes by Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, Valtteri Bottas, Lance Stroll, Lewis Hamilton or Kimi Raikkonen.
Mercedes’ record tally of three podiums at the track could be equalled or bettered by Force India, Ferrari, Red Bull or Williams.
It’s likely that Nico Rosberg will cease to be the driver to have led the most laps at this track after this weekend. Rosberg led all 51 laps of the 2016 race here, a tally which Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo or Valtteri Bottas could equal or beat this weekend.
Daniil Kvyat, Max Verstappen and Nico Hulkenberg could take the unwanted outright record of most DNFs at the circuit this weekend. Each have retired from races at this track twice – Kvyat has never finished a race here so far in his career.
Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel could continue their shared record of being the only drivers to have scored in every Grand Prix held at the Baku City Circuit. Hamilton is the current record holder for points scored at the track with 45. Vettel needs to outscore Hamilton by four points to snatch that record this weekend.
In terms of teams, Mercedes, Ferrari and Alfa Romeo (Sauber) will all be hoping to retain their 100% finish record at the circuit.
Sebastian Vettel has won at 21 different Grands Prix so far in his career and he could make that 22 with a victory this weekend. If he does so, he’ll equal Michael Schumacher’s record of winning at 22 different Grands Prix, putting him one away from Lewis Hamilton’s record. Vettel is yet to take a podium finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. He finished in the top three here in 2016, but when the event was titled the ‘European Grand Prix’. A top three this weekend will see him equal Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher with podium finishes at 25 different Grands Prix titles.
