RACE BY RACE: OSCAR PIASTRI‘S 2023 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS

2023 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri became the 14th Australian driver to race in Formula 1 and made the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix the 340th consecutive race which an Australian driver has started. Piastri qualified 18th for the race, recording McLaren’s 80th Q1 exit in Formula 1.

On Sunday, Piastri took the unwanted honour of becoming the first retirement of the 2023 Formula 1 season, retiring on Lap 14 with an electronics failure. 2023 is the first time since 2019 that a McLaren driver has been the first retirement of the season. Piastri became the first driver to retire having started 17th on the grid at the Bahrain Grand Prix since Takuma Sato in 2007.

2023 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX

After recording his first Q3 appearance on Saturday at the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri finished the race in 15th place, reaching the end of a Grand Prix for the first time in his career.

2023 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

At the 2023 Australian Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri became the third Australian driver – after Mark Webber and Daniel Ricciardo – to race at Albert Park in Formula 1. Despite being eliminated in Q1, Piastri followed in the footsteps of manager Webber and Ricciardo and scored his maiden points on home soil at the Australian Grand Prix. Piastri is the first driver to pick up his first points at his home event since Lance Stroll at the 2017 Canadian Grand Prix.

2023 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX

Qualifying tenth for the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri joined a group of six other drivers who’ve reached Q3 on every appearance at Baku City Circuit. With Piastri just missing out on points in 11th place, this was the first Azerbaijan Grand Prix in which only one McLaren driver scored since 2017.

2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX

With both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri out in Q1, McLaren recorded their first double Q1 elimination since the 2018 Brazilian Grand Prix. This was Piastri’s third Q1 exit and, qualifying 19th , his first back row qualification.

2023 MONACO GRAND PRIX

For the fifth Monaco Grand Prix weekend in a row, one McLaren driver reached Q3 while the other was out in Q2. Oscar Piastri qualified in 11th place, recording the first Q2 elimination of his career. On Sunday, Piastri gained one position from where he started to record points for the second time in his career. With team-mate Lando Norris also scoring, this was the first time since 2016 that both McLaren drivers have scored at the Monaco Grand Prix.

2023 SPANISH GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri overtook Larry Perkins and Dave Walker to become the seventh most experienced Australian driver in Formula 1 at the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix. Qualifying in the top ten, Piastri joined Max Verstappen and Michael Schumacher in an exclusive club of drivers who’ve reached Q3 on every appearance at the Spanish Grand Prix.

2023 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

Though he crashed out in Q3, Oscar Piastri equalled his best qualifying result to date with ninth place. He also qualified ninth at the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Having also reached Q3 last time out in Spain, this the first time Piastri reached Q3 at consecutive races.

Piastri joined Lewis Hamilton and Esteban Ocon them in the club of drivers who’ve never missed out on reaching Q3 at the Canadian Grand Prix. Juan Pablo Montoya, Mick Schumacher and Nico Rosberg are the only other drivers who’ve reached Q3 on every appearance at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

In the race, Piastri finished 11th. It’s the third consecutive Canadian Grand Prix in which a McLaren driver finished 11th, as the team continued their now decade-long point-less streak in Montreal.

2023 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX

While his team-mate had upgrades to his McLaren car, Oscar Piastri was stuck with the older spec and could finish no higher than 16th – his worst result since the Miami Grand Prix. Piastri has lost at least three positions from where he has started in all of the last three races.

2023 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri recorded his best qualifying and race result so far in Formula 1 at the 2023 British Grand Prix. After qualifying third – the first top eight qualification of his career – Piastri went on to finish fourth. With Lando Norris on the podium and Piastri fourth, McLaren scored more points in the 2023 British Grand Prix than they did in the entire season up until the Silverstone race. It was the first time since 2010 that both McLaren drivers finished in the top four at Silverstone.

2023 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX

With fourth place in qualifying for the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri qualified in the top four for a second consecutive race having never qualified in the top eight at any race before then. On Sunday, Piastri scored points for a second consecutive race. It’s the first time in his Formula 1 career that he has scored at two races in a row. Piastri joined Antônio Pizzonia and Johnny Dumfries as only the third driver to hold a 100% points finish rate at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

2023 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri out-qualified his team-mate for the second time this season. The 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix is the only other race at which the Australian has qualified ahead of his team-mate.

The Australian out-qualified his team-mate again in the Sprint Shootout. He started the Saturday race from the front row and led the early laps in the race. He finished as runner-up.

On Sunday, Piastri retired on the opening lap of the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix. This was the Australian’s first retirement since his debut at the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix. Piastri became the first driver to retire on the first lap since Charles Leclerc at the 2023 Australian Grand Prix.

2023 DUTCH GRAND PRIX

Having started eighth, Oscar Piastri finished ninth in the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix. It was the third race which he has finished in a row in which he has finished one position lower than where he started.

2023 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Setting the seventh fastest time in Q3 at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri out-qualified his team-mate for the third time in his career. Piastri ultimately finished outside of the points and dropped to 12th in the final order thanks to a time penalty. However, Piastri did lead a lap of the race, making him the 180th driver to lead a (non-Sprint) lap in Formula 1 history.

2023 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX

With his final push lap curtailed by Lance Stroll’s crash, Oscar Piastri qualified only 17th for the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. It ended a streak of five consecutive Q3 appearances. Piastri gained ten positions over the course of the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix to finish seventh and score points for the fifth time in the last six race weekends. This was the first top seven finish recorded from 17th on the grid at the Singapore Grand Prix.

2023 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri qualified on the front row for the first time in his Formula 1 career at the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix, becoming the fifth Australian to qualify on the front row for a Grand Prix. The race was therefore the first F1 Grand Prix to feature an Australian driver on the front row since the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, when Daniel Ricciardo started alongside Max Verstappen and went on to win the race.

The 2023 Japanese Grand Prix made Piastri the first driver to take a podium finish in their rookie season since Lance Stroll in 2017 and the first driver to lead a Grand Prix in their maiden season since Esteban Gutierrez in 2013. Piastri became the fifth driver to record his maiden Formula 1 podium finish at Suzuka, after Roberto Moreno and Aguri Suzuki in 1990, Mika Hakkinen in 1993 and Kamui Kobayashi in 2012.

2023 QATAR GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri became a Formula 1 winner over the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix. However, like George Russell, Piastri took his maiden race win in a Sprint event. Piastri is the first driver to win a race in his maiden season since Lewis Hamilton in 2007.

Sprint race winner Piastri recorded his best Grand Prix result to date on Sunday with second place. This was Piastri’s eighth points-scoring Grands Prix and second is the eighth different points-scoring position in which the Australian has finished. Piastri was voted Driver Of The Day for the second race in a row.

2023 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri recorded the third DNF of his rookie season at the 2023 United States Grand Prix. On Friday, he joined Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc and team-mate Lando Norris in the 100% Q3 appearance club at the track.

2023 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri finished eighth on his first appearance at the Mexico City Grand Prix. With both Piastri and his team-mate finishing in the top eight, this was McLaren’s second consecutive double points finish in Mexico as well as the first time both McLaren drivers finished in the top eight in Mexico since 1989.

2023 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX

Qualifying tenth after going off track on his only attempt at a competitive lap in Q3, Oscar Piastri equalled the longest Q3 streak of his career to date at the 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. This was his fifth consecutive top ten qualification.

2023 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX

Like his team-mate Oscar Piastri recorded the fifth Q1 exit of his career at the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix and qualified on the back row for the second time, after the 2023 Miami Grand Prix.

Finishing 10th, Piastri recorded the fastest lap of a race for the second time in his career. He also set the fastest lap at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix. This was the first time McLaren secured fastest laps at successive races since the 2021 Italian and Russian Grands Prix.

2023 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri joined Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, Felipe Massa, Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg as a member of the 100% Q3 appearance rate club at Yas Marina Circuit.
