RACE BY RACE: OSCAR PIASTRI’S 2024 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS

2024 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri was the only driver other than Max Verstappen to finish the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix in the same position as he started. This was only the second time in his career, after the 2023 Miami Grand Prix, that Piastri finished where he started.

2024 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri recorded McLaren’s best Saudi Arabian Grand Prix qualifying and race result to date over the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix weekend. He qualified fifth for the race and finished fourth, recording his best result since his podium finish at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix.

2024 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri qualified sixth for his home Grand Prix – ten positions higher than where he qualified in 16th. With fourth place on Sunday, Piastri equalled the best result for an Australian driver on home soil in F1 history. Mark Webber finished fourth in 2012, while Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth in both 2016 and 2018.

Finishing fourth for the second race in a row, this was the second time Piastri finished in the top four at consecutive races, having last done so with his podium finishes in the 2023 Japanese and Qatar Grands Prix. Having finished eighth last year, Piastri maintained his 100% points-scoring record at the Australian Grand Prix.

2024 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

Along with Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton, Oscar Piastri maintained his 100% Q3 appearance rate at the Japanese Grand Prix. Although he was overtaken by George Russell on the last lap, eighth place for Piastri meant that he remained in a small group of drivers who’ve scored on every appearance at Suzuka. The other three drivers who have done so are Stefan Johansson, Cristiano Da Matta and Nicholas Latifi. All three appeared at the track only once during their Formula 1 career.

2024 CHINESE GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri’s fifth place in qualifying for the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix equalled his best qualifying result of the year to date. In the race, he finished eighth for the third time in the first four races in 2024.

2024 MIAMI GRAND PRIX

After qualifying in the top six for a fifth consecutive race, Oscar Piastri failed to score points for the first time in seven races, finishing only 13th. His last non-points-scoring finish came at the 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, where he finished 14th.

2024 EMILIA ROMAGNA GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri set the second fastest lap time in Q3 at the 2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix but dropped to fifth on the grid after being handed a three place grid penalty for impeding Kevin Magnussen. This was the second front row qualification of Piastri’s career, after the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix where he also qualified second. It was also the first time since the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix that Piastri qualified ahead of team-mate Lando Norris.

Piastri picked up points for the sixth time in the seven Grands Prix to date in 2024. His fourth place finish in the 2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix equalled his best result of the season to date, having also finished fourth in the Saudi Arabian and Australian Grands Prix.

2024 MONACO GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri qualified on the front row for the second weekend in a row. Unlike the Imola race – where he picked up a grid penalty – Piastri actually started the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix from the front row of the grid. It made this the 100th Grand Prix for which an Australian driver started on the front row. Piastri recorded McLaren’s first front row qualification at the Monaco Grand Prix since 2011, when Jenson Button qualified in second place.

With his podium finish at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, Piastri remained in a small group of drivers who have scored points on every appearance at Circuit de Monaco. With second place, Piastri equalled the best Grand Prix result of his career to date. He last finished on the podium – and in second place – at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix. Piastri recorded McLaren’s first top two finish in Monaco since Lewis Hamilton won the 2008 Monaco Grand prix with the team.

Piastri’s podium made the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix the 350th Grand Prix weekend at which an Australian driver scored a point. It also made Australia the seventh nation to score 3,000 points in Formula 1.

2024 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

With Lando Norris second and Oscar Piastri fourth, this was the first time both McLaren drivers qualified in the top four at the Canadian Grand Prix since 2007, when the team locked-out the front row. Piastri maintained his 100% Q3 appearance rate in Montreal. On Sunday, a fifth place finish saw the Australian score points at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for the first time.

2024 SPANISH GRAND PRIX

After his first lap time was deleted and he made a mistake on his second run, Oscar Piastri failed to set a lap time in Q3 at the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix and qualified tenth – his worst qualifying result of the season to date. Piastri also qualified tenth here last year. Along with Max Verstappen, Oscar Piastri maintained his 100% Q3 appearances rate at the Spanish Grand Prix. Michael Schumacher is the only other driver in that club.

2024 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX

After setting the third fastest lap time in Q3, Oscar Piastri was demoted to seventh on the final grid for the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix after exceeding track limits. This was his first Q3 appearance at the Austrian Grand Prix.

With second place in the race, Piastri equalled the best Grand Prix result of his career to date. He also finished as runner-up at the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix and the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix. Piastri had never previously scored a point in a Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, having finished only 16th in 2023. Piastri’s second place finish was McLaren’s first top two result in Austria since 2003, when Kimi Raikkonen finished as runner-up. Piastri recorded the first podium finish from seventh on the grid since Lewis Hamilton finished third at the 2023 British Grand Prix.

2024 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Along with his team-mate, Oscar Piastri maintained his 100% Q3 appearance record at Silverstone, remaining in a group of five drivers who’ve never missed out on Q3 at the track. For the second year in a row, Piastri finished in fourth place at the British Grand Prix.

2024 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri became Formula 1’s 115th winner at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix. He is the 75th of F1’s 115 winners to win within his first 35 Grand Prix starts. Piastri became the fifth Australian driver – after Jack Brabham, Alan Jones, Mark Webber and Daniel Ricciardo – to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Piastri became the sixth driver – after Damon Hill, Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Heikki Kovalainen and Esteban Ocon – to take their maiden Grand Prix victory at the Hungaroring.

Piastri is the first driver born in the 21st century to win a Grand Prix. Luigi Fagioli was the first driver born in the 19th century to win a Grand Prix, at the 1951 French Grand Prix, while Giuseppe Farina was the first driver born in the 20th century to win a Grand Prix, at the 1950 British Grand Prix.

Piastri’s win means that there have now been seven different Grand Prix winners in the 2024 season. This is the 16th F1 season in total to have had seven or more winners. It is the first time it has happened since 2012.

Piastri was voted Driver Of The Day for the third time in his career, after the 2023 Japanese and Qatar Grands Prix.

Piastri’s win means that he continues his 100% points-scoring rate at the Hungarian Grand Prix. He is one of only three drivers to have scored on every appearance at the Hungaroring. The others – Antonio Pizzonia and Johnny Dumfries – only raced one time each at the track.

2024 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

With Oscar Piastri having become the latest new Grand Prix winner at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix was the first race to feature as many as 13 previous race winners on the grid since the 1980 Italian Grand Prix.

Qualifying sixth, Piastri maintained his 100% Q3 appearance record at the Belgian Grand Prix. Mark Webber, Nick Heidfeld and Sébastien Bourdais are the only other drivers who reached Q3 on every Spa appearance since the current qualifying system was introduced in 2006. Piastri qualified sixth for the second year in a row at Spa.

Piastri finished as runner-up to Lewis Hamilton in the race. Piastri’s podium made this the tenth consecutive Grand Prix in which McLaren recorded a podium finish. It is McLaren’s longest streak of podiums since taking them at 13 races in a row between the 2011 German Grand Prix and the 2012 Chinese Grand Prix. This was McLaren’s first podium finish at the Belgian Grand Prix since Jenson Button’s victory in 2012 and Piastri’s fourth top two finish in the last seven rounds.

Piastri led four laps of the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix, making this the fourth successive race in which he led at least one lap.

2024 DUTCH GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri’s fourth place finish in the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix marked his first non-podium finish since the British Grand Prix. Piastri led five laps of the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix – making this the fifth consecutive race in which he led at least one lap. It is the 88th occasion on which a driver has led laps in five consecutive Grands Prix.

2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri qualified on the front row for the fourth time in 2024 at the Italian Grand Prix, equalling his best qualifying result of the season to date. With Lando Norris on pole and Piastri second, McLaren recorded their first front row lock-out at the Italian Grand Prix since 2012, as well as the team’s second front row lock-out of the season. Along with Alex Albon, Piastri maintained his 100% Q3 appearance record at Monza.

Piastri finished in the top two for the third time in the last four races. This was his sixth consecutive top four result. Having finished 12th last year, this was the first time that Piastri scored points at the Italian Grand Prix.

2024 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX

After equalling his best qualifying result of the year on Saturday – and out-qualifying his team-mate for the first time since the Monaco Grand Prix – Oscar Piastri won the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, taking the second Grand Prix win of his Formula 1 career. It made the driver of car number 81 the 81st driver to have won multiple rounds of the World Championship since it began in 1950.

Piastri became the seventh different driver to have won at Baku City Circuit in eight Formula 1 races to date at the track. This was the first time Piastri scored a point in Azerbaijan. Piastri’s win made the Azerbaijan Grand Prix the 13th consecutive race in which a McLaren driver has finished on the podium. It equalled the team’s second-longest podium streak in their history. Piastri was voted Driver of the Day for the fourth time in his Formula 1 career.

2024 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX

After qualifying fifth for the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri held the longest active streak of top six qualifications of any driver, having qualified in the top six at every race since the British Grand Prix.

Piastri became the 16th driver to finish in the top three at Marina Bay Street Circuit, finishing third. With both Lando Norris and Piastri finishing on the podium at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, McLaren made this the 14th consecutive race in which they finished in the top three. That makes this the second longest podium streak in the team’s history. Their only longer streak came at the 19 races between the 2007 Australian and 2008 Malaysian Grands Prix.

This was Piastri’s eighth consecutive top four finish and his sixth podium result in the last eight races.

2024 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri qualified fifth for the 2024 United States Grand Prix. He continued his streak of qualifying in the top six at all of the last eight races – the longest active streak of any current driver.

Finishing fifth, Piastri crossed the finish line at the United States Grand Prix for the first time. Piastri finished in the top five for a ninth consecutive race. This was the first time since 2012 that both McLaren drivers finished in the top five at COTA.

2024 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri was out in Q1 at the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix, recording the sixth Q1 elimination of his career. It was his first since the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix, ending a streak of 20 consecutive top ten qualifications. It left Max Verstappen as the only driver to have reached Q3 at every Grand Prix to date in 2024. This was the second year in a row that a McLaren driver exited in Q1 and qualified 17th for the Mexico City Grand Prix.

With eighth place in the race, Piastri finished outside of the top five for the first time since finishing 13th in the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. This was the second year in a row that Piastri finished eighth in Mexico. Piastri gained nine positions in the race – the most places he’s gained in a Grand Prix since gaining ten positions in the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix.

2024 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX

While Lando Norris took pole for the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri qualified eighth. This was the first time since 2014 that both McLaren drivers qualified in the top eight in Sao Paulo.

On Sunday, with Norris sixth and Piastri eighth, this was the first race since the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix in which neither McLaren driver finished in the top five. This was the first time Piastri scored a point in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, having finished 14th last year. The 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix was the first time since 2019 that both McLaren drivers finished in the points in Brazil.

2024 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri qualified eighth for the second race in a row. With Lando Norris sixth and Piastri eighth, this was the first time since the Bahrain Grand Prix at the start of the season that neither McLaren driver qualified in the top five positions. Piastri continued a 16-race scoring streak, finishing in seventh place.

2024 QATAR GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri finished on the podium for the tenth time in his career at the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix, becoming the 81st driver to record as many as ten podium results in Formula 1. Piastri finished in the top three in a Grand Prix for the first time since the Singapore Grand Prix. Piastri became the second driver – after Max Verstappen – to record multiple podium finishes at the Qatar Grand Prix.

2024 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX

With Oscar Piastri qualifying second, behind his team-mate, McLaren recorded their first-ever Abu Dhabi Grand Prix front row lock-out. This was the team’s 65th front row lock-out in total – their first since the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. McLaren became the third team to record as many as 65 front row lock-outs, after Ferrari (at the 2019 Mexican Grand Prix) and Mercedes (at the 2020 Hungarian Grand Prix). Piastri is yet to qualify outside of the top three at Yas Marina Circuit.

After contact with Max Verstappen on the first lap and a penalty for a collision later in the race, Piastri finished tenth in the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Despite almost being lapped by his team-mate, Piastri completed every lap in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Having completed every lap in every other Grand Prix this season, Piastri becomes only the fourth driver in history to complete every lap of a Formula 1 season. He is the first driver to do so in a season that he did not win the title. Michael Schumacher achieved the feat in 2002, Lewis Hamilton did so in 2019 and Max Verstappen did so in 2023. Piastri is the 11th driver to have completed every race in a Formula 1 season.

Finishing tenth, this was the first time Piastri finished outside of the top eight since finishing 13th at the Miami Grand Prix. Along with his team-mate, Piastri remained in a group of four drivers who’ve scored on every appearance at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Paul di Resta and Felipe Massa are the other two drivers to have done so.
