2025 QATAR GRAND PRIX: WEEKEND MILESTONES
Max Verstappen holds the record for most victories at the Qatar Grand Prix, with two wins. He could extend the record at the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix, or Lewis Hamilton could equal the existing record. Any other driver winning would make them the third driver to take victory at Lusail Circuit.
Red Bull lead the way for most team wins in Qatar, with two. Their record could be equalled at the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix by Mercedes.
Max Verstappen has finished on the podium in all three races to date at Lusail Circuit. He could extend the record to four podiums at the track in the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix, or his record could be equalled by Oscar Piastri.
Red Bull and McLaren are tied as the teams with the most podiums in Qatar, with three apiece. Either team could set a new outright record in the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix, while the existing record could be equalled by Alpine, Ferrari or Mercedes.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME AT THE QATAR GRAND PRIX?
A race weekend full of penalties saw Verstappen claim victory at the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix, while Zhou brought home Sauber’s only points of the season.
After just a single hour of practice at the final Sprint weekend of the 2024 season, the 20 drivers took to Lusail Circuit for Sprint Qualifying. Lando Norris secured pole position for the Saturday race and led throughout the 19 laps of the Sprint – until the final few metres, where he let team-mate Oscar Piastri by as payback for the Australian allowing Norris to win the Sprint in Sao Paulo.
Piastri had put himself into second place after overtaking front row starter George Russell in the opening corners. The duo battled throughout the race, with Piastri remaining ahead of the Mercedes. Sergio Perez – who exited in SQ1 on Friday and started from the pit lane – missed the green light at the end of the pits and was overtaken by fellow pit lane starter Franco Colapinto.
In Grand Prix qualifying, it was Max Verstappen who claimed pole position – which would have marked the first time he’d start from the front of the grid since the Austrian Grand Prix. However, Verstappen was deemed to have driven unnecessarily slowly in Q3 and was demoted one position on the grid, promoting Russell into pole. Meanwhile, Sauber had one of their strongest qualifying performances of the year, qualifying 12th and 13th.
While Verstappen won his position back from Russell at the start, Norris attempted to go around both the Mercedes and the Red Bull as he rose to second place in the order. At the back, a collision between Franco Colapinto and Esteban Ocon eliminated both from the race and brought out the Safety Car. Alex Albon was also spun by Lance Stroll later on in the lap, in an incident which saw the Canadian handed a 10-second time penalty – though he would retire only nine laps into the race.
At the restart, Piastri clinched fourth place from Leclerc, while Liam Lawson spun out at Turn 1, with him being handed a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision. A slow pit stop for polesitter Russell cost him valuable time.
Just after the race passed its midway point, Albon lost his wing mirror on the main straight. The debris was not cleared and was run over by Valtteri Bottas, depositing debris across the track. Soon after, Hamilton picked up a puncture, as did Carlos Sainz. Race leader Verstappen was quick to report that Norris had not slowed for yellow flags. The Safety Car was deployed once more.
There were more penalties to come, as Hamilton received a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane, while Norris – who had challenged Verstappen for the lead at the second restart – was handed a ten-second stop/go penalty after failing to slow for yellow flags.
No sooner had the race restarted for the second time than the Safety Car was called out for the third time. Perez spun of his own accord before the restart and retired from the race while Nico Hulkenberg – who had been involved in the first lap incident – spun out into the gravel trap.
Norris’ penalty dropped him to 15th and last of the drivers remaining in the race. He went on to make up places over the final laps and eventually finished tenth, securing the fastest lap. Verstappen took victory, with Leclerc and Piastri joining him on the podium. There were celebrations for Zhou Guanyu in eighth place, who secured Sauber’s first and only points of the season with an eighth place finish.
