2021 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX
On his Red Bull debut, Sergio Perez became the first driver since Max Verstappen at the 2018 Monaco Grand Prix to be eliminated in Q2 when their team-mate went on to take pole position. Perez nearly didn’t start the Bahrain Grand Prix following issues on the formation lap. He eventually started from the pit lane, after necessitating a second formation lap. It was the first time that there has been an abandoned start in F1 since the 2017 British Grand Prix. Perez gained fifteen places from his pit lane start – the most positions he has ever gained from where he has started in a Grand Prix. His previous highest was fourteen places gained in the 2012 Australian Grand Prix.
2021 EMILIA ROMAGNA GRAND PRIX
Sergio Perez recorded a front row start for the first time in his career at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Perez qualified on the front row once before, at the 2016 European Grand Prix, but carried a grid penalty into the race. This was the first F1 race with a Mexican driver starting on the front row since the 1971 Dutch Grand Prix, almost 50 years ago. Perez failed to score in the race, marking the first time he has finished a race without scoring since the 2019 Hungarian Grand Prix. Perez became the first driver to fail to score having started second on the grid at Imola since Mika Hakkinen, who retired having started second at the 1998 San Marino Grand Prix.
2021 PORTUGUESE GRAND PRIX
Sergio Perez finished where he started for the first time since the 2020 Russian Grand Prix. On his way to finishing in fourth place, Perez led thirteen laps of the Portuguese Grand Prix. This was the third F1 race which Perez has led, after the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix and the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix.
2021 SPANISH GRAND PRIX
Qualifying in eighth place, Sergio Perez became the first Red Bull driver to qualify outside of the top six on the grid at the Spanish Grand Prix since both drivers qualified outside the top six in 2015. Perez finished the race in fifth place, as he did last year with Racing Point, equalling his second-best result at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
2021 MONACO GRAND PRIX
Sergio Perez finished in fourth place at the 2021 Monaco Grand Prix, marking the first time he has scored at the event since his podium finish in 2016.
2021 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX
Sergio Perez claimed his second Grand Prix victory, becoming the fifth different driver to win in five races at Baku City Circuit. He also became the fifth different driver to win a race with the Red Bull team. Perez claimed victory by 1.385 seconds – the smallest win margin seen to date in Azerbaijan. Perez’s victory marked the first time that Honda power has won two consecutive F1 races since the 1992 Monaco and Canadian Grands Prix.
2021 FRENCH GRAND PRIX
Sergio Perez’s presence made this the 300th F1 race which a Mexican driver has started. Finishing in third place, Perez became the 30th different driver to finish on the podium at Circuit Paul Ricard; and the first Mexican driver to do so. This was the first time that Perez has scored at the French Grand Prix in his Formula 1 career. On Saturday, he became the first driver to qualify for 200 races without taking pole position.
2021 STYRIAN GRAND PRIX
Sergio Perez finished fourth in the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix, recording his best result at the Red Bull Ring. His previous best finish here was sixth; the position in which he finished both of 2020’s races at the venue.
2021 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX
For the third time in the last four Red Bull Ring races, Sergio Perez finished in sixth place. Perez became the first driver to not win on their 200th race start since Felipe Massa at the 2014 British Grand Prix. The last three drivers to reach 200 starts – Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel – all won on their milestone appearance. Nelson Piquet was the last driver to finish sixth on his 200th start, doing so at the 1991 Italian Grand Prix. Along with Raikkonen, Perez set a new record for the most finishes in Austria, surpassing John Watson’s former record of nine finishes in the country.
2021 BRITISH GRAND PRIX
While one Red Bull driver took pole, the other was the only retiree in the first F1 Sprint. Sergio Perez qualified last for the British Grand Prix as a result of his retirement, marking his first back row start since the 2019 United States Grand Prix. His only worse qualifying performance was at the 2012 Monaco Grand Prix, where he failed to set a time. Perez failed to score in the race, but did set the fastest lap. It was the fifth time he has set the fastest lap of a Grand Prix in his career.
2021 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX
Caught up in the first corner crash, Sergio Perez recorded his first retirement as a Red Bull driver. It was the first time he has failed to finish since the 2020 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
2021 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX
Sergio Perez crashed on his way to the grid ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix and would have recorded a Did Not Start had the race started at its original scheduled time. It would have been the 33rd DNS recorded at Spa, as well as Perez’s first DNS since the 2014 Malaysian Grand Prix. However, in the gap between rain delays, Red Bull were able to repair Perez’s car and he was classified in nineteenth place. It was the first time a Red Bull driver has been classified nineteenth in a Grand Prix.
2021 DUTCH GRAND PRIX
Sergio Perez failed to make it through to Q2 at the Dutch Grand Prix, becoming the first Red Bull driver to be eliminated in Q1 since Alex Albon at the 2019 Russian Grand Prix. This was Perez’s first Q1 elimination since the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix. After changing his power unit, Perez started the race from the pit lane. This was his third pit lane start in the last four races. Finishing in eighth place, Perez scored points for the first time since the Austrian Grand Prix. Points have been recorded from the pit lane only twice in 2021, both times by Perez, at the Bahrain and Dutch Grands Prix.
2021 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX
Sergio Perez finished the Italian Grand Prix in fifth place following a five second time penalty. This was the eighth consecutive year in which the Mexican driver has scored points at Monza. That becomes the longest active streak of points-scoring appearances at Monza following Lewis Hamilton’s retirement.
2021 RUSSIAN GRAND PRIX
With ninth place, Sergio Perez maintained his record of scoring points at every Russian Grand Prix to date. Lewis Hamilton is the only other driver to have achieved this feat.
2021 TURKISH GRAND PRIX
Sergio Perez finished in third place, recording his thirteenth top three finish. It’s the second year in succession that Perez has finished on the podium at the Turkish Grand Prix. It’s also the second year in a row in which the driver starting sixth has finished on the podium in Istanbul. Sixth is the grid slot from which Lewis Hamilton won last year. This was the first time that Perez has finished on the podium since the French Grand Prix. The Circuit Paul Ricard race is the only other event to this point in the 2021 season at which both Red Bull drivers finished on the podium.
2021 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX
After qualifying third – his best Saturday result since the Austrian Grand Prix – Sergio Perez went on to finish on the podium at the United States Grand Prix. Perez recorded his fourteenth podium finish, equalling the career tally of Richie Ginther. Ginther also scored his 14th career podium in car number 11, which was powered by Honda. Perez’s podium is only the second in the United States for a Mexican driver. The last time a Mexican driver finished on the podium at the United States Grand Prix was in 1970, when Pedro Rodriguez finished second with BRM.
2021 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX
With fourth place, Sergio Perez recorded his best home qualifying result. He had previously never qualified above ninth place here, which is where he qualified in 2015. Perez went on to become the first Mexican driver to finish on the podium at their home Grand Prix. He also led six laps of the race, becoming the first Mexican driver to lead on home soil. This was the third consecutive race in which Perez has finished on the podium. It’s the first time he’s recorded three successive podium results in his F1 career.
2021 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX
With fourth place, Sergio Perez recorded his best Brazilian Grand Prix qualifying result to date. His previous best was sixth fastest in 2017. He went on to finish fourth in the race and set the fastest lap on the final lap. 2021 is the first season in which Perez has recorded more than one Fastest Lap in a single year. Perez has scored at all of the last five races in Brazil.
2021 QATAR GRAND PRIX
For the third time in 2021, Sergio Perez failed to reach Q3. He recovered to fourth place in the race. Both Red Bull have finished in the top five at all of the last five races. The last time that both Red Bull cars finished in the top five at five or more consecutive races was at the opening 12 rounds of the 2011 season.
2021 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX
Sergio Perez crashed out of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, ending an eight race streak of points-scoring appearances for the Mexican driver.
2021 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX
Sergio Perez reached Q3 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for the first time since 2017. With fourth place, he equalled his best qualifying result at Yas Marina Circuit. He also qualified fourth here with Force India in 2015. Perez retired from the race in the late stages, becoming the third driver to record consecutive DNFs at the track, after Pastor Maldonado and Carlos Sainz. This was the first time Perez has retired at consecutive races since the 2014 Monaco and Canadian Grands Prix.
