RACE BY RACE: VALTTERI BOTTAS‘ 2023 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS

2023 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

Along with Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas equalled Daniel Ricciardo’s record for most starts with a single car number at the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix.

Bottas failed to reach Q3, marking the first time that the Finn has failed to qualify in the top ten at the Bahrain Grand Prix since his first appearance at the track in 2013. However, Bottas continued his 11-race points-scoring streak at the venue, finishing in eighth place.

Bottas became only the third driver to have scored in Bahrain on 11 occasions, as well as the fourth driver to record 11 top ten finishes at the track. This was his best Sunday result since finishing seventh at the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix.

2023 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX

Valtteri Bottas’ presence on the grid made the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix the 700th World Championship race to feature a Finnish driver. Finland became the seventh nation to reach the milestone.

Along with Lewis Hamilton, Bottas set a new record for the most starts with a single car number. However, it wasn’t a brilliant evening for Bottas. He finished in 18th – the lowest finishing position he has ever recorded in a Grand Prix which he has completed.

2023 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

For the first time since the 2022 Belgian Grand Prix, Valtteri Bottas qualified on the back row of the grid at the 2023 Australian Grand Prix. It was the Finn’s first ever Q1 elimination at Albert Park. Bottas went on to finish 11th in the race, making this the first Melbourne race in which Bottas has failed to score since 2015, when he did not start the race after sustaining an injury in qualifying. His debut in 2013 is the only other time the Finn has failed to score at Albert Park.

2023 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX

Valtteri Bottas lost five positions from his starting place to finish 18th in the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. It wass the most positions he has lost in a Grand Prix since the 2021 Mexico City Grand Prix.

2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX

Valtteri Bottas gave Alfa Romeo their first Q3 appearance of the season at the 2023 Miami Grand Prix, though the timing of the red flag in the final session meant that Bottas failed to set a lap time in Q3. This was Bottas’ first Q3 appearance since the 2022 Mexico City Grand Prix.

2023 MONACO GRAND PRIX

Valtteri Bottas was eliminated in Q2 at the Monaco Grand Prix for a second consecutive year. He qualified 15th. It was his second worst qualifying result at the track; only his 17th place in 2015 was worse.

2023 SPANISH GRAND PRIX

Valtteri Bottas failed to progress to Q2 at the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix, qualifying in 16th place. This was the first time that the Finn failed to reach Q3 at Catalunya since his maiden season in 2013, when he was also eliminated in Q1.

Bottas finished in 19th place at the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix, recording the worst result of his career, excluding retirements. Bottas failed to score at the Spanish Grand Prix for the first time since 2017. 2013 – when he finished 16th – is the only other Catalunya race in which the Finn has not picked up points.

2023 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

Valtteri Bottas failed to reach Q3 at the Canadian Grand Prix for only the second time in his career. He qualified 15th, four positions down on where he qualified in 2022. Bottas finished tenth in the race, making this the 418th Grand Prix in which a Finnish driver picked up a point. That saw Finland overtake Italy as the nation to have scored in the fifth-most Formula 1 races.

This was the first time Bottas has scored since the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix and the eighth consecutive Canadian Grand Prix in which the Finn has scored. Bottas’ tenth place marked the first time in 2023 that the driver starting 14th scored a point in a Grand Prix.

2023 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX

With 14th place, the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix was the first time in his career that Valtteri Bottas has failed to qualify in the top ten at the Red Bull Ring. He did not reach Q3 in 2022 but improved to 10th in the Sprint race which determined the grid. Though he finished only 15th in the Grand Prix, Bottas – along with Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez – was one of a trio of drivers to become the first to finish 11 Formula 1 races in Austria.

2023 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Valtteri Bottas was eliminated in Q2 for a second consecutive season at the British Grand Prix. Bottas did not participate in the session as he came to a stop on track at the end of Q1. He was later disqualified due to not being able to supply a sample of fuel.

He extended the record for most appearances at Monza without a DNF.

For the first time since 2016, Valtteri Bottas out-qualified his team-mate at the Singapore Grand Prix. In the race, Bottas recorded his first retirement of the 2023 season. 2023 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX
