With his first Chinese Grand Prix victory in 2024, Max Verstappen added a 26th different circuit to the list of tracks at which he has won during his Formula 1 career. Verstappen sits second on the list of most different circuits at which a driver has won in F1 – five behind Lewis Hamilton, who tops the list.
With just one venue remaining on the current calendar at which Verstappen has not won, he will be unable to reach Hamilton’s record of 31 different circuits at which a driver has won unless F1 adds more new venues to its calendar. The next track scheduled to join the calendar is the new Madrid circuit, which will take over as host of the Spanish Grand Prix in 2026.
Below are the circuits at which Verstappen has raced at in Formula 1 but has never taken a Grand Prix victory at.
Marina Bay Street Circuit, Singapore
APPEARANCES: 8
BEST RESULT: 2ND
Max Verstappen’s victory at the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix leaves Marina Bay Street Circuit – host of the Singapore Grand Prix – as the only track on the current Formula 1 calendar at which he has never taken a victory.
Even in his most dominant season to date, in 2023, Verstappen failed to win at the track. In fact, the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix was the only occasion in the 20 races between the 2023 Miami Grand Prix and the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on which Verstappen did not stand on the top step of the podium.
Verstappen has made eight appearances to date at Marina Bay Street Circuit and has scored points all but once. He has recorded three podium finishes at the track, with a best result of second place in 2018 and 2024. In 2018, he finished just under nine seconds behind race winner Lewis Hamilton.
Sochi Autodrom, Russia
APPEARANCES: 7
BEST RESULT: 2ND
Aside from Marina Bay Street Circuit, the track at which Max Verstappen has made the most appearances without taking a victory is Sochi Autodrom, the former host of the now discontinued Russian Grand Prix.
Verstappen was on the grid for every running of the Russian Grand Prix except in 2014, its inaugural year. Verstappen scored points on six of his seven race starts at the track, impressively gaining 14 and 18 positions from where he started in 2018 and 2021 respectively after picking up grid penalties.
Verstappen finished as runner-up in both the 2020 and 2021 races at Sochi Autodrom, with his second place finish to Valtteri Bottas being the closest he came to winning at the track. He finished just over seven seconds behind the Mercedes driver.
Verstappen led for 24 laps in the 2018 Russian Grand Prix, which were the only laps he ever led at the track.
Istanbul Park, Turkey
APPEARANCES: 2
BEST RESULT: 2ND
The Turkish Grand Prix returned to the Formula 1 calendar amid the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. After topping all three practice sessions and being fastest in the first two qualifying sessions, Max Verstappen was beaten to pole position by Racing Point’s Lance Stroll. He started second on the grid but fell to eighth at the start. Despite a mid-race spin, Verstappen recovered to sixth place.
One year later, the Turkish Grand Prix again returned to the calendar. Verstappen once again started from the front row but was unable to beat polesitter Valtteri Bottas to victory. He finished as runner-up, 14 seconds behind the Mercedes driver.
Algarve International Circuit, Portugal
APPEARANCES: 2
BEST RESULT: 2ND
Like the Turkish Grand Prix, the Portuguese Grand Prix appeared on the F1 calendar in both 2020 and 2021 as a result of the ongoing pandemic. Max Verstappen qualified third for both races at the Portimao track and converted both starts into podium finishes. He finished third, behind the two Mercedes drivers, in 2020 and finished runner-up to Lewis Hamilton in 2021.
Mugello, Italy
APPEARANCES: 1
BEST RESULT: DNF
In 2020, again as a result of the pandemic, Formula 1 staged three races in Italy: one at Monza, one at Imola and one at Mugello. The Tuscan Grand Prix took place in September 2020 at the Mugello circuit, which remains the only time that F1 has visited the circuit for a Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen qualified behind the two Mercedes drivers for the race, in third place, but was eliminated in an opening lap collision. Verstappen was one of the innocent parties in a crash between Kimi Raikkonen, Pierre Gasly and Romain Grosjean.
Mugello is the only track at which Verstappen has raced in Formula 1 but never finished on the podium. He has amassed podium results at 31 tracks in total. Only Hamilton has finished in the top three at more different venues (35).
Nurburgring, Germany
APPEARANCES: 1
BEST RESULT: 2ND
The Nurburgring is another circuit which has appeared on the calendar only once in Max Verstappen’s tenure in Formula 1. The legendary track hosted the one-off Eifel Grand Prix in 2020.
Verstappen qualified in third place for the race and found his way by Valtteri Bottas during the race to finish as runner-up to Lewis Hamilton, who equalled Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 Grand Prix victories.
Despite never winning at the Nurburgring, Verstappen does have a win in Germany. Verstappen was victorious in the 2019 German Grand Prix, a wet/dry thriller held at the Hockenheimring.
