Your 2018 #AustrianGP Predictions: The Results

Before the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix weekend began, I posted five prediction polls on the Lights Out twitter account. How many of the questions did you get right? Find out below!

1. Which Mercedes driver will have the better weekend?

YOUR PREDICTION: HAMILTON IN QUALIFYING AND THE RACE

CORRECT ANSWER: BOTTAS IN QUALIFYING, HAMILTON IN THE RACE

Just like in 2017, it was Valtteri Bottas who had the upper hand in Qualifying at the Red Bull Ring. He set the pole time by the closest margin ever seen at this track – just 0.019 seconds. But then everything fell apart for the Finn on Sunday as he lost his lead at the start and then retired with technical issues. Lewis Hamilton made it further into the race but he’d suffer a similar fate to his team-mate and Mercedes would record a rare double DNF.

2. Which midfield team will score more points?

YOUR PREDICTION: RENAULT

CORRECT ANSWER: HAAS

Haas won this battle, and by quite a margin. Only 19% of you thought the American team would score the most points from the midfield teams, but they recorded their best ever result, taking 22 points between their two drivers. Force India were next up with fourteen points, Fernando Alonso took four points for McLaren and Renault failed to score for the first time this season.

3. Will Romain Grosjean or Sergey Sirotkin score?

YOUR PREDICTION: NEITHER WILL

CORRECT ANSWER: GROSJEAN WILL

Things looked good for Grosjean as he lined up fifth on the grid – a joint best-ever grid slot for the Haas team and he moved up the order on Sunday to finish a fantastic fourth and finally put some points on the board. Sergey Sirotkin finished last of the cars still running at the end of the race.

4. Will the pole time be slower or faster than 62 seconds?

YOUR PREDICTION: FASTER

CORRECT ANSWER: SLOWER

It was a new track record for Valtteri Bottas on Saturday with a 1:03.130 being good enough for pole. He didn’t quite reach the 62 second mark, though.

5. Will Nico Hulkenberg be beaten in Qualifying?

YOUR PREDICTION: NO

CORRECT ANSWER: YES

Carlos Sainz has now beaten Nico Hulkenberg in four of the last five qualifying sessions. The 2018 Austrian Grand Prix is the first time where Hulkenberg has been beaten at the Red Bull Ring.
