RACE BY RACE: YUKI TSUNODA‘S 2023 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS

2023 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

Both Zhou Guanyu and Yuki Tsunoda lost their 100% points-scoring appearance rates in Bahrain. It leaves Paul di Resta and Stoffel Vandoorne as the only drivers to have scored on every appearance at the track.

2023 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX

Yuki Tsunoda was unlucky to narrowly miss out on points once again at the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. This was the third successive race in which the Japanese driver finished 11th. After finishing 1.096 seconds away from a point in Bahrain, he finished 2.668 seconds away from a points finish in Saudi Arabia.

2023 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

After finishing 11^th in all of the three previous races, Yuki Tsunoda finally picked up his first point since the 2022 United States Grand Prix at the 2023 Australian Grand Prix. Tsunoda’s point saw him overtake Takuma Sato as the Japanese driver to have scored the second-most points in Formula 1. Only Kamui Kobayashi sits ahead of him in that list.

2023 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX

Yuki Tsunoda recorded AlphaTauri’s first Q3 appearance of the 2023 season at the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Tsunoda maintained his 100% Q3 record at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, having qualified eighth on all three appearances. This was the first time he out-qualified his team-mate at the track.

Tsunoda finished in tenth place at the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, picking up a single point for a second consecutive race. This was the second time that Tsunoda has picked up points at Baku City Circuit. It was the first time he recorded points at consecutive races since the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix.

2023 MIAMI GRAND PRIX

Yuki Tsunoda was out-qualified by Nyck de Vries for the first time as AlphaTauri team-mates at the 2023 Miami Grand Prix. Tsunoda could qualify no higher than 17^th, recording his second Q1 elimination of the season. 17^th place marked Tsunoda’s worst qualifying result since the 2022 Belgian Grand Prix.

For the fourth time in the last six races, Tsunoda finished in 11^th place. Tsunoda is having a consistent start to the 2023 season, having finished 10^th in the other two races so far this year.

2023 MONACO GRAND PRIX

Yuki Tsunoda reached Q3 at the Monaco Grand Prix for the first time. His previous best qualifying result here was 11^th, which is where he qualified in 2022. Tsunoda recorded the AlphaTauri team’s second Q3 appearance of the 2023 season.

After suffering brake issues, Tsunoda recorded his worst result of the year to date with 15^th place; thoug it was Tsunoda’s best result in Monaco to date.

2023 SPANISH GRAND PRIX

Yuki Tsunoda finished ninth on the road at the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix but dropped to 12th in the final order following a five-second penalty. Having started 15th, this was the second year in succession that Tsunoda gained three places from where he started at the Spanish Grand Prix.

2023 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX

Yuki Tsunoda made his 50^th Grand Prix start at the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix, becoming the 145^th driver to have made 50 starts in Formula 1. This was also be his 50^th start in car number 22. Andrea de Cesaris and Jenson Button are the only other drivers to have made as many as 50 starts in car number 22.

2023 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX

On Friday at the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix, Yuki Tsunoda recorded consecutive Q1 exits for the first time since the 2022 Hungarian and Belgian Grands Prix. This was the first time Tsunoda out-qualified his team-mate at the Red Bull Ring.

With 19^th place in the race, Tsunoda recorded his worst race result since his retirement from the 2022 Mexico City Grand Prix. This was the second time in his career, after the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix, that Tsunoda has finished 19^th.

2023 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Qualifying 17^th, Tsunoda equalled his worst qualifying result of the 2023 season so far at the British Grand Prix. He also qualified 17^th at the Miami Grand Prix. This was the first time Tsunoda out-qualified his team-mate at Silverstone. Tsunoda recorded his worst British Grand Prix result so far in his career with a 16^th place finish.

2023 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX

Yuki Tsunoda has not made it out of Q1 on any of his three visits to the Hungarian Grand Prix. With 17^th place, Tsunoda equalled his worst qualifying result of the season. He was out-qualified by his team-mate for the first time since the Spanish Grand Prix. With 15^th place in the race, Tsunoda recorded his best result since finishing 14^th in the Canadian Grand Prix.

2023 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

With 11^th place, Yuki Tsunoda reached Q2 for the first time since the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix. 11^th is his best qualifying result since he last reached Q3 at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Tsunoda enjoyed a strong Grand Prix, running as high as sixth during the race. He finished tenth, picking up his third point of the season. He last scored at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where he also finished tenth. This is the first time in his three Belgian Grand Prix appearances that Tsunoda has scored a point. Tsunoda’s point ensured 2023 would become the seventh consecutive season in which the Red Bull junior team scored at the Belgian Grand Prix.

2023 DUTCH GRAND PRIX

With Liam Lawson replacing Daniel Ricciardo for the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, Yuki Tsunoda became the first driver to have had three different team-mates in a single season since Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari in 2009. Though he finished the race only 15^th, the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix marked the first time that Tsunoda has crossed the finish line at Zandvoort.

2023 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Yuki Tsunoda failed to start the 2023 Italian Grand Prix after coming to a stop on the formation lap. 2023 is the third consecutive season in which Tsunoda has recorded a DNS and this was the second time that he recorded a DNS at Monza. Tsunoda is the first driver to record multiple DNSs at Monza in Formula 1.

There were three formation laps as a result of Tsunoda’s stoppage. The last race to have three formation laps was the 2003 Austrian Grand Prix, when a faulty launch control on Cristiano da Matta’s Toyota meant that the drivers toured the circuit three times before the race began.

2023 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX

Yuki Tsunoda set the fastest lap time in Q1 at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. It marked the first time that the Red Bull junior team was fastest in a qualifying session since Jean-Eric Vergne was fastest in Q1 at the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix. The 2023 Singapore Grand Prix marked the second time that the fastest driver in Q1 went on to set the slowest lap time in Q2. Max Verstappen also achieved the rare feat at the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Tsunoda retired on the opening lap of the race. Having failed to start the last race at Monza, Tsunoda has failed to complete a full racing lap at either of the last two Grands Prix. Tsunoda has retired from both of his Singapore Grand Prix appearances. He is the third driver – after Adrian Sutil and Mark Webber – to retire on both of his first two appearances at Marina Bay Circuit.

2023 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

Qualifying in ninth place at the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix, Yuki Tsunoda reached Q3 for the first time since the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, when he also qualified ninth. Tsunoda made this the third time in the last four Japanese Grands Prix that at least one of the Red Bull junior team’s drivers has reached Q3. Tsunoda finished 12^th, recording his best home race result to date.

2023 QATAR GRAND PRIX

With Yuki Tsunoda 15^th and Liam Lawson 17^th at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, Tsunoda finished ahead of Lawson for the first time during their stint as AlphaTauri team-mates.

2023 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX

For the fourth time in the last six races, Yuki Tsunoda qualified in 11^th place at the 2023 United States Grand Prix. Tsunoda finished eighth, recording his best result since his seventh place finish at the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. It marked AlphaTauri’s best result of the season to date and the Red Bull junior team’s best United States Grand Prix result since Carlos Sainz finished sixth for Toro Rosso in 2016.

Tsunoda set the fastest lap for the first time in his Formula 1 career at the 2023 United States Grand Prix. This was the third fastest lap set by a Japanese driver in Formula 1, after Satoru Nakajima at the 1989 Australian Grand Prix and Kamui Kobayashi at the 2012 Chinese Grand Prix.

2023 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX

Yuki Tsunoda finished 12^th in the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix, reaching the chequered flag for the first time in his three appearances at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

2023 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX

With 16^th place in qualifying for the 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Yuki Tsunoda recorded his worst qualifying result since qualifying 17^th at the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix. Having qualified 15^th in the last two years, Tsunoda recorded his worst Interlagos qualifying result to date.

Tsunoda picked up points in a Grand Prix for the second time in the last three races and for the fifth time overall in 2023. This was the first time Tsunoda has scored points at Interlagos.

2023 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX

After a mistake on his final attempt in qualifying, Yuki Tsunoda qualified last for the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix. This was the fifth time Tsunoda qualified last in his career – the first time he has done so since the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix. Tsunoda was the third and final driver to retire from the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix. He recorded his third non-finish of the year.

2023 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX

Yuki Tsunoda qualified sixth for the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, recording the best qualifying result of his career to date. This was Tsunoda’s first Q3 appearance since the Japanese Grand Prix. He is yet to be out-qualified by a team-mate at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Sixth is the best qualifying result for the Red Bull junior team at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix since Daniil Kvyat qualified fourth with Toro Rosso in 2014.

With eighth place in the race, Tsunoda equalled his best result of the 2023 season. He also finished eighth in the 2023 United States Grand Prix. Tsunoda led five laps of the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, making this only the second F1 race in history which a Japanese driver has led. The only other Japanese driver to have done so is Takuma Sato, who led two laps in the 2004 European Grand Prix. Tsunoda’s efforts saw him voted Driver Of The Day for the first time in his Formula 1 career.
