RACE BY RACE: ZHOU GUANYU’S 2024 F1 SEASON IN STATISTICS
2024 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX
Zhou Guanyu recorded his worst Bahrain Grand Prix qualifying result to date and his first Q1 exit at the track with 17th place. Zhou’s fastest lap time in Q1 was just one thousandth of a second slower than his team-mate’s best lap. Finishing the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix in 11th place, Zhou was the driver who gained the most places in the race, making up six places from 17th on the grid.
2024 SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX
After recording a Q1 exit at the event for the first time, Zhou Guanyu finished only 18th at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. It was his worst result to date at Jeddah Corniche Circuit – a track at which he has never picked up a point.
2024 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX
With neither Zhou Guanyu nor team-mate Valtteri Bottas picking up points in the 2024 Australian Grand Prix, this was the first time that the Sauber team failed to score in the Australian Grand Prix since 2018.
2024 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX
Zhou Guanyu set the slowest lap time in qualifying and was eliminated in Q1 for a seventh consecutive race weekend. It was the second time in the last three races that Zhou set the slowest Q1 lap. This was the first back row qualification for a Sauber driver at the Japanese Grand Prix since 2018.
Zhou became the third retirement of the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix, pulling into the pits with gearbox issues. He recorded his and the Sauber team’s first retirement since the 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
2024 CHINESE GRAND PRIX
At the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix, Zhou Guanyu became the first Chinese driver to compete at his home event in Formula 1. He finished the race in 14th place – his second-best finish of the season so far.
2024 MIAMI GRAND PRIX
Zhou Guanyu made his 50th race start at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. He set the slowest qualifying time for the third time in 2024’s five races to date.
2024 EMILIA ROMAGNA GRAND PRIX
Zhou Guanyu finished 15th – the second time he has done so in his two F1 appearances at Imola.
2024 MONACO GRAND PRIX
Zhou Guanyu qualified in 20th place for the fourth time in 2024. He continued his 100% Q1 exit rate at the Monaco Grand Prix, having now exited in Q1 on all three appearances at the event. On Sunday, hw was one of only three drivers to finish the race in a better position than where he started.
2024 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX
Zhou Guanyu qualified 20th for the fifth time this season. With team-mate Valtteri Bottas 13th and Zhou finishing 15th, this was the first time neither Sauber driver scored at the Canadian Grand Prix since 2019.
2024 SPANISH GRAND PRIX
Zhou Guanyu reached Q2 for the first time in 2024 at the Spanish Grand Prix first non-Q1 exit of the 2024 season. Zhou finished 13th in the race, making up ttwo positions from where he started.
2024 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX
Qualifying 20th for the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix, Zhou Guanyu set the slowest qualifying lap time in Q1 for the seventh time this season. Zhou became the first driver to qualify as low as 20th for Sauber at the Austrian Grand Prix since Marcus Ericsson, who qualified 20th in 2018. Zhou has been eliminated in Q1 on all three of his appearances at the Austrian Grand Prix. With Valtteri Bottas 16th and Zhou 17th on Sunday, this was the sixth consecutive Austrian race in which the Sauber team failed to score a point.
2024 BRITISH GRAND PRIX
For only the second time this season, Zhou Guanyu progressed to Q2. He recorded his best qualifying result of the season so far with 14th place and out-qualified team-mate Valtteri Bottas for the first time since the 2023 United States Grand Prix. Of the races he has finished, the 2024 British Grand Prix was the first time that Zhou finished in a worse position than where he started since the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix.
2024 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX
With 19th place in the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, Zhou Guanyu recorded his worst result to date in Formula 1 in a race which he has finished.
2024 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX
Zhou Guanyu made his 58th start in car number 24 at the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix, putting him equal with Timo Glock for the most starts in car 24.
Zhou set the slowest lap time in qualifying for the seventh time this season. This was the second successive season in which Zhou exited in Q1 at the Belgian Grand Prix. Zhou was the only driver to retire from the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix. This marked his second DNF of the 2024 season – his first since the Japanese Grand Prix.
2024 DUTCH GRAND PRIX
Zhou Guanyu made his 59th start in car number 24 at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix, overtaking Timo Glock for the most starts in car 24. Zhou was eliminated in Q1 for a third successive race weekend. For the first time in his career, he finished a Grand Prix in 20th position.
2024 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX
The 2024 Italian Grand Prix was the third race in a row at which Zhou Guanyu set the slowest lap time in qualifying. Neither Sauber driver scored in the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, meaning that the team’s points total remains at zero this season. However, both Valtteri Bottas and Zhou gained positions in the race – the first time that both of the team’s drivers had done so in a single race since the Austrian Grand Prix.
2024 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX
Daniel Ricciardo, Lando Norris, Valtteri Bottas, Zhou Guanyu and Esteban Ocon were the five drivers eliminated in the opening stage of qualifying. While this was Zhou’s second consecutive Q1 exit at the track, for every other driver this was their first Q1 elimination at Baku City Circuit. This was the first time in the Sauber team’s history that they recorded a double Q1 exit at Baku City Circuit. Zhou – who started from the pit-lane – qualified on the back row for the fourth race in a row.
For the first time in his career, Zhou reached the chequered flag at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
2024 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX
For the ninth time in 2024, Zhou Guanyu qualified in 20th place. This was his fifth consecutive back row qualification. This was the first time since 2017 that Sauber set the two slowest qualifying times at the Singapore Grand Prix. 2024 is the second year in a row that the team recorded a double Q1 exit in Singapore. This was Sauber’s fourth consecutive double Q1 exit in the 2024 season. They also recorded four consecutive double Q1 eliminations between the 2024 Miami and Canadian Grands Prix.
2024 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX
The 2024 United States Grand Prix was the fifth consecutive race weekend at which both Sauber drivers were eliminated in Q1. This was the team’s fourth double Q1 exit at COTA – their first since 2019. Zhou Guanyu was the slowest qualifier for the sixth Grand Prix in a row. Zhou became the first Sauber driver to qualify last for a race at Circuit of The Americas.
2024 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX
For the sixth time in the last seven races, Zhou Guanyu set the slowest lap time of the drivers who competed in qualifying. Bottas and team-mate Zhou Guanyu finished in the same positions as they finished in the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix.
2024 SAO PAULO GRAND PRIX
Zhou Guanyu set the slowest qualifying lap time of all the competing drivers for the seventh time in the last eight race weekends.
2024 LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX
For the first time since the British Grand Prix, Zhou Guanyu reached Q2 at the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix. This was also the first time since the Silverstone race that Zhou out-qualified Sauber team-mate Valtteri Bottas. Zhou qualified in 13th place – his best Grand Prix qualifying result since reaching Q3 at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix. This was the first time since the Hungarian Grand Prix that Zhou did not qualify on the back row of the grid, ending a streak of eight back row qualifications.
With 13th place in the race, Zhou equalled his best result in the last 21 races. He also finished 13th at the Spanish Grand Prix. 11th in Bahrain is his only better finishing position so far this year.
2024 QATAR GRAND PRIX
Qualifying 12th for the Qatar Grand Prix, Zhou Guanyu recorded his best qualifying result of the 2024 season to date. This was the first time Zhou qualified in the top 12 since reaching Q3 at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix. Zhou out-qualified Sauber team-mate Valtteri Bottas for a second consecutive race – the first time he had done so at consecutive races since the 2023 Saudi Arabian and Australian Grands Prix.
On Sunday, Zhou scored his and the Sauber team’s first points of the season with an eighth place finish in the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix. This was Zhou’s first points-scoring appearance since last year’s Qatar Grand Prix, where he finished ninth. Zhou equalled the best result of his Formula 1 career to date, having last finished eighth in the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix. Zhou was voted Driver of the Day for the first time in his career. He became the 27th different driver to win the vote.
2024 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX
Zhou Guanyu made his last F1 appearance at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He qualified in 17th place, making this the first time he did not qualify on the back row at three consecutive races since the 2023 Belgian, Dutch and Italian Grands Prix. Zhou finished 13th on his last outing with Sauber. It was his third consecutive top 13 result, having finished 14th or lower at all of the 11 previous races.
